The fate of shear-oscillated amorphous solids

Chen Liu et al.

Summary: The behavior of shear-oscillated amorphous materials is studied using a coarse-grained model. It is found that the steady-state behavior is determined by the initial preparation and the oscillation amplitude. The transient regime characterizing the growth and motion of the shear band is also investigated.

Correlation between plastic rearrangements and local structure in a cyclically driven glass

Saheli Mitra et al.

Summary: This study investigates the correlation between local structure and propensity for structural rearrangement in glass forming liquids and glasses. The results show that in a cyclic shear deformation, particles with higher S-2 and lower n(tet) are more likely to undergo rearrangement, regardless of the average energies of the configurations and strain amplitude. Distinctive local ordering is observed outside the shear band region, with the formation of icosahedral clusters.

Rejuvenation in Deep Thermal Cycling of a Generic Model Glass: A Study of Per-Particle Energy Distribution

Marian Bruns et al.

Summary: The effect of low temperature thermal cycling on a generic model glass was investigated. Signature of rejuvenation in terms of per-particle potential energy distributions was observed. The linear dimension plays a key role in making these effects visible, and a consistent interpretation of this new finding in terms of relaxation processes and thermal excitation was provided.

The fate of shear-oscillated amorphous solids

Chen Liu et al.

Summary: The behavior of shear-oscillated amorphous materials was studied using a coarse-grained model. Samples prepared at different degrees of annealing showed different steady-states under various fixed amplitudes of oscillation. Poorly annealed materials displayed shear-annealing under small oscillations, while ultra-stabilized materials were found to be insensitive to them.

Yielding transition in stable glasses periodically deformed at finite temperature

Nikolai V. Priezjev

Summary: The research found that with increasing glass stability, the shear modulus and yielding peak of periodically deformed binary glasses increase towards plateau levels, and the yielding transition occurs at higher amplitudes and becomes more abrupt. The initiation and formation processes of shear bands are elucidated through spatiotemporal analysis of nonaffine displacements.

Cooling under Applied Stress Rejuvenates Amorphous Alloys and Enhances Their Ductility

Nikolai V. Priezjev

Summary: This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effect of tensile stress applied during cooling of binary glasses on potential energy states and mechanical properties. The results show that higher applied stress can enhance potential energy and improve the plasticity of glasses. Additionally, the amorphous structure of rejuvenated glasses characterized by an increase in the number of contacts between smaller type atoms can enhance ductility in glasses prepared at larger applied stresses and higher initial temperatures.

Accessing a broader range of energy states in metallic glasses by variable-amplitude oscillatory shear

Nikolai V. Priezjev

Summary: The research revealed that the potential energy and mechanical properties of amorphous materials can be influenced by variable-amplitude loading. Proper loading can rejuvenate well-annealed glasses, while improper loading can lead to a gradual decrease in energy states of poorly annealed glasses.

The role of annealing in determining the yielding behavior of glasses under cyclic shear deformation

Himangsu Bhaumik et al.

Summary: Recent computer simulations have shown that yielding behavior in amorphous solids is characterized by a discontinuous transition, with the degree of annealing playing a crucial role. Highly annealed glasses exhibit discontinuous stress changes at yielding, while poorly annealed glasses show gradual yielding. Additionally, in cyclic shear simulations, poorly annealed glasses tend to become better annealed as they approach the yielding point, with a modest discontinuous change at yielding.

Shear band healing in amorphous materials by small-amplitude oscillatory shear deformation

Nikolai V. Priezjev

Summary: This study investigates the effect of small-amplitude periodic shear on annealing of a shear band in binary glasses through molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that increasing strain amplitude leads to glasses being relocated to deeper potential energy levels, and mechanical tests demonstrate an increase in shear modulus and yield stress with loading at strain amplitudes close to the yield strain.

Yielding in an Integer Automaton Model for Amorphous Solids under Cyclic Shear

Kareem Khirallah et al.

Summary: Results on an automaton model of an amorphous solid under cyclic shear show that the system can exhibit pure elastic behavior, limit cycles, and irreversible plasticity. As the strain amplitude approaches the yielding transition, the number of cycles required for the system to reach a periodic orbit diverges, the effective diffusivity of the plastic strain field vanishes, and the average period of the limit cycles increases.
