Non-presentation at hospital following a suicide attempt: a national survey

Fabrice Jollant et al.

Summary: A national survey in France revealed that a significant proportion of individuals do not seek hospitalization or receive professional healthcare services following a suicide attempt. Even among those who do not go to the hospital, only a small percentage of them choose to visit a doctor or psychologist. The prevalence of suicide attempts reported in the community is much higher than that recorded in hospital administrative databases.

Can Treating Patients With PNES Lower the Risk of Sudden Unexpected Death?

Adriana C. Bermeo-Ovalle

Summary: This study investigated the mortality rate in patients diagnosed with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) on video-EEG monitoring (VEM) compared to the general population. The study found that PNES patients had a significantly increased mortality rate, especially those under 30 years old who had an 8-fold higher risk of death. External causes, suicide, and epilepsy were identified as the main contributors to mortality in PNES patients.

Suicide and Seizures A National Cohort Study in Veterans

Yarden Bornovski et al.

Summary: Veterans with seizures, both epileptic and psychogenic, have a higher risk of suicide and suicide-related behavior compared to the general veteran population. Comorbidities such as alcohol abuse, illicit drug abuse, major depression, PTSD, and psychotropic medication use increase this risk, while being married or having higher education decreases the risk. The negative impact of seizures on psychosocial outcomes is evident in both PNES and epilepsy patients.
