Blocking microglial activation of reactive astrocytes is neuroprotective in models of Alzheimer's disease

Jong-Sung Park et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of age-related dementia, with neuroinflammation playing a critical role in disease progression. Targeting microglia and astrocytes could provide potential therapies for slowing down neurodegeneration in AD.

Microglial Calhm2 regulates neuroinflammation and contributes to Alzheimer's disease pathology

Jinbo Cheng et al.

Summary: This study showed that increased expression of Calhm2 in an AD mouse model, and its knockout significantly reduced amyloid beta deposition, neuroinflammation, and cognitive impairments. Knockout of Calhm2 inhibited microglial proinflammatory activity but increased phagocytic activity, leading to the restoration of the balance between inflammation and phagocytosis.
