Comparison of Bifurcated Halogen with Hydrogen Bonds

Steve Scheiner

Summary: Bifurcated halogen bonds are constructed with FBr and FI as Lewis acids, paired with NH3 and NCH bases. In most cases, a bifurcated system is energetically inferior to a single linear bond.

Azine Steric Hindrances Switch Halogen Bonding to N-Arylation upon Interplay with σ-Hole Donating Haloarenenitriles

Sergey V. Baykov et al.

Summary: The reaction between XNPN and various azines proceeds differently based on the steric and electronic effects of the heterocycles. Sterically unhindered azines undergo N-arylation to form azinium salts, while sterically hindered or electron-deficient azines form stable co-crystals with XNPN through halogen bonding. The halogen bonds in the obtained co-crystals were analyzed and evaluated using various techniques, with estimated energies ranging from -7.6 kcal/mol to -11.4 kcal/mol.

2,5-Dibromothiophenes: Halogen Bond Involving Packing Patterns and Their Relevance to Solid-State Polymerization

Sergey Baykov et al.

Summary: A series of 2,5-dibromo-3-R-thiophenes were studied for their structures and halogen bonding interactions, revealing the presence of halogen bonds in these compounds. X-ray analysis and crystal packing patterns identified three general types of structures in these compounds. DFT calculations were performed to evaluate the strength of these halogen bonds, showing energies in the range of 0.5 to 2.2 kcal/mol regardless of packing type.

Unexpected organic hydrate luminogens in the solid state

Feng Zhou et al.

Summary: The intercalation of water molecules into crystal lattices can lead to structural rearrangement and the formation of organic hydrate luminogens, significantly enhancing fluorescence emission in the crystalline phase. Water molecules inhibit hydrogen atom shuttling between two nitrogen atoms in the molecule, altering electronic transitions and enhancing emission from the keto form.

Comparative Structural Study of Three Tetrahalophthalic Anhydrides: Recognition of X•••O(anhydride) Halogen Bond and πh•••O(anhydride) Interaction

Sergey V. Baykov et al.

Summary: Structures of three tetrahalophthalic anhydrides (TXPA: halogen = Cl (TCPA), Br (TBPA), I (TIPA)) were studied by X-ray diffraction, revealing various types of halogen bonds and lone pair center-dot-pi-hole contacts. Computational studies showed that these contacts are caused by the packing effect.

Electron belt-to-σ-hole switch of noncovalently bound iodine(I) atoms in dithiocarbamate metal complexes

Lev E. Zelenkov et al.

Summary: Co-crystallization of dithiocarbamate complexes [M-II(S2CNEt2)(2)] (M = Cu 1, Ni 2, Pd 3, Pt 4) with 1,3,5-triiodotrifluorobenzene (FIB) forms an isomorphic series of co-crystals showing quadruple Cu/Ni/Pd/Pt isostructural exchange. The negative electrostatic potentials of Cu, Ni, Pd, and Pt decrease in the order Cu-II (-8.8) > Ni-II (-24.5) > Pd-II (-28.6) > Pt-II (-33.3 kcal mol(-1)), with Cu showing a shift from semicoordination to halogen bonding due to electron belt-to-s-hole switch. Semicoordinative contact Cu•••I is established by LP(I)-> LP*(Cu) charge transfer analysis. The more nucleophilic Pd and Pt centers exhibit unconventional metal-involving halogen bonding contacts with FIB, with the strongest interactions observed between Pt and the iodine(I)-based donors.

Impact of noncovalent interactions on structural and photophysical properties of zero-dimensional tellurium(iv) perovskites

Aaron D. Nicholas et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis and characterization of eight new halotellurate(iv) compounds, where non-covalent interactions play a significant role in influencing Te-X bonding and band gap energies. The findings demonstrate the ability to tune band gap energies based on the strength of noncovalent interactions, with different trends observed for [TeCl6](2-) and [TeBr6](2-) materials. This report provides a useful platform for investigating the relationship between second sphere effects and the structural and photophysical properties within the halotellurate(iv) family of low dimensional perovskites.

Iodonium salts as efficient iodine(iii)-based noncovalent organocatalysts for Knorr-type reactions

Sevilya N. Yunusova et al.

Summary: Hypervalent iodine(iii)-derivatives have higher catalytic activity than other aliphatic and aromatic iodine(i)- or bromine(i)-containing substrates for a Knorr-type reaction, with dibenziodolium triflate showing the highest activity for generating N-acyl pyrazoles. The catalytic activity of iodine(iii) is attributed to its binding with a ketone, as indicated by H-1 NMR titration data and DFT calculations.
