Perspectives Rapid response of a medical center upon the surge of COVID-19 epidemic in Taiwan

Jih-Hsin Huang et al.

Summary: A surge of COVID-19 cases in northern Taiwan posed a crisis to the medical system, but Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) responded quickly and increased its capacity through various measures such as reducing hospitalization cases, expanding beds, and conducting extensive testing. With determined leadership and concerted efforts, FEMH successfully combated the epidemic.

When Should Asymptomatic Persons Be Tested for COVID-19?

Audrey N. Schuetz et al.

Summary: Initially, CDC suggested that asymptomatic individuals do not necessarily need to be tested for COVID-19, but later updated its guidance to support testing, especially for those who have had contact with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases. A commentary from the American Society for Microbiology urges CDC to consult primary stakeholders of COVID-19 testing when making impactful changes in testing guidance.

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic in hospital: An insight into environmental surfaces contamination, disinfectants' efficiency, and estimation of plastic waste production

Faezeh Seif et al.

Summary: This study investigates environmental surface contamination in different hospital wards, finding positive samples on commonly touched surfaces such as patient bed handles, nursing stations, toilet door handles, cell phones, patient toilet sinks, toilet bowls, and patient's pillows. The study also reveals that SARS-CoV-2 can survive on inanimate surfaces after disinfection by ethanol 70% and sodium hypochlorite (0.001%).

Nosocomial transmission and outbreaks of coronavirus disease 2019: the need to protect both patients and healthcare workers

Mohamed Abbas et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted hospitals and healthcare providers worldwide, increasing the risk of nosocomial transmission and outbreaks to non-COVID patients or residents, who are at the highest risk of mortality. Reports on nosocomial outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 have shown variable attack rates of up to 60%, with high mortality. There is limited evidence on transmission dynamics and the role of healthcare workers in initiating or amplifying nosocomial outbreaks, but there has been a shift towards expanded testing criteria for patients and healthcare workers, including asymptomatic individuals, which appears crucial in identifying and controlling outbreaks.

Clustering and multiple-spreading events of nosocomial severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection

J. Jung et al.

Summary: In healthcare settings, approximately 70% of nosocomial cases of COVID-19 did not lead to secondary cases, while one-fifth of infectors were responsible for SSEs and MSEs, accounting for about half of total cases. Early case identification, isolation, and extensive contact tracing are crucial for preventing transmission and SSEs.

Are saliva and deep throat sputum as reliable as common respiratory specimens for SARS-CoV-2 detection? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Kazem Khiabani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the reliability and sensitivity of saliva, deep throat sputum, and other respiratory specimens in detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The results showed that saliva and deep throat sputum performed well as diagnostic tools for frontline screening of the infection, with the disease severity directly related to viral load and test sensitivity.
