The exo-β-N-acetylmuramidase NamZ from Bacillus subtilis is the founding member of a family of exo-lytic peptidoglycan hexosaminidases

Maraike Mueller et al.

Summary: Research has identified that the ybbC gene in Bacillus subtilis encodes a novel exo-beta-N-acetylmuramidase named NamZ, which plays a crucial role in cell wall turnover and recycling. NamZ is able to sequentially hydrolyze intact peptidoglycan from the non-reducing ends and belongs to a new family of glycosidases.
