Trans-lithospheric diapirism explains the presence of ultra-high pressure rocks in the European Variscides

Petra Maierova et al.

Summary: This study reveals that deeply subducted continental crust can form partially molten buoyant diapirs, far from plate boundaries, explaining the presence of ultra-high pressure rocks. Through a comparison of geological observations and thermo-mechanical numerical models, the researchers show that trans-lithospheric diapirism could be a common process in mountain belt formation.
