Visible Light-Induced Catalyst-Free Activation of Peroxydisulfate: Pollutant-Dependent Production of Reactive Species

Yinghao Wen et al.

Summary: This study reports the catalyst-free activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) using visible light, which effectively degrades various organic pollutants. The formation of reactive species is different in the PDS visible light system with and without pollutants. The degradation of atrazine (ATZ) in the PDS visible light system involves both radical and nonradical processes, with O-1(2) playing an important role.

A facial strategy to efficiently improve catalytic performance of CoFe2O4 to peroxymonosulfate

Lili Gao et al.

Summary: Through in-situ substitution strategy, a modified Co1.5Fe1.5O4 was successfully synthesized, showing higher catalytic activity in phenol degradation, better mineralization ability, and higher PMS utilization compared to CoFe2O4. Additionally, the Co1.5Fe1.5O4 had smaller particle size and larger specific surface area, which was more favorable for exposure of active sites, potentially due to the presence of more reactive centers Co (II) and surface hydroxyl compounds.

Efficient removal of estrogenic compounds in water by MnIII-activated peroxymonosulfate: Mechanisms and application in sewage treatment plant water

Daqing Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of three endocrine-disrupting chemicals by gamma-MnOOH activated peroxymonosulfate, showing that 40% of the degradation can be attributed to heterogeneous electron transfer reaction with freshly generated Mn(IV) and 60% to sulfate radical degradation pathway. The system showed complete degradation of EDCs after 30mM of reaction with specific conditions. The application of this system in real sewage treatment plant water showed decreased degradation rate constants of EDCs, providing new insights into the reactivity of combined gamma-MnOOH and PMS.

Determining the leading sources of N-nitrosamines and dissolved organic matter in four reservoirs in Southern China

Jiaxing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of carcinogenic N-nitrosamines and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in four reservoirs in a southern Chinese city. It found that industrial and pharmaceutical-origin precursors dominated the N-nitrosamines distribution, with traces of pesticide-based precursors also present. The distribution of N-nitrosamines varied among the reservoirs, with certain compounds found abundantly in all reservoirs. Additionally, anthropogenic activities were identified as the primary source of DOM and N-nitrosamines in the city based on land-use analysis.

Making waves: Improving removal performance of conventional wastewater treatment plants on endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs): their conjugates matter

Ze-hua Liu et al.

Summary: Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are emerging contaminants that cannot be effectively removed by traditional wastewater treatment methods. Advanced chemical oxidation methods, such as ozonation, have been proven to be effective but costly in removing EDCs. This study highlights the importance of EDCs conjugates, showing that their concentrations vary with temperature and increasing cleavage rates can improve removal efficiency.
