Sequence analysis of the emerging SARS-CoV-2 variant Omicron in South Africa

Lulan Wang et al.

Summary: The discovery of the Omicron variant has sparked global concerns about its mutations, transmission, and immune escape properties. Current research suggests that the variant may impact viral infectivity and host immunity, and it may evolve from clade 20B.

Rapid epidemic expansion of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in southern Africa

Raquel Viana et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in southern Africa has experienced three distinct waves, driven by different variants. The recently identified Omicron variant has rapidly spread in South Africa and to numerous countries, raising global concern.

Omicron escapes the majority of existing SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies

Yunlong Cao et al.

Summary: The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 contains 15 mutations in the receptor-binding domain, leading to evasion of over 85% of tested neutralizing antibodies. Different epitope groups of neutralizing antibodies are affected to varying degrees by single mutations of Omicron. Antibodies targeting the conserved region of sarbecovirus remain most effective against Omicron.

Coronavirus Resistance Database (CoV-RDB): SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility to monoclonal antibodies, convalescent plasma, and plasma from vaccinated persons

Philip L. Tzou et al.

Summary: The Stanford Coronavirus Resistance Database (CoV-RDB) collects and curates published data on the neutralizing susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2 variants and spike mutations to antibodies. The database provides an interactive interface for displaying neutralization data at different levels of granularity and offers a sequence analysis program to assist users in determining mutation-detection thresholds.

Clinical severity of, and effectiveness of mRNA vaccines against, covid-19 from omicron, delta, and alpha SARS-CoV-2 variants in the United States: prospective observational study

Adam S. Lauring et al.

Summary: mRNA vaccines were highly effective in preventing covid-19 associated hospital admissions related to the alpha, delta, and omicron variants. Three vaccine doses were required for protection against omicron, while two doses provided protection against delta and alpha variants. Omicron variant showed lower disease severity compared to delta variant but still resulted in morbidity and mortality. Vaccinated patients had lower disease severity than unvaccinated patients for all the variants.

Tracking SARS-CoV-2 Omicron diverse spike gene mutations identifies multiple inter-variant recombination events

Junxian Ou et al.

Summary: This study identifies multiple recombination events between Omicron variants and other variants of concern, suggesting the important roles of co-infection and genome recombination in the ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2. The study also characterizes core mutations of Omicron subvariants and their associations with other variants. Additionally, recombination events between Omicron and Delta variants are observed.
