Theoretical insights into nitrogen oxide activation on halogen defect-rich {001} facets of bismuth oxyhalide

Kang Xu et al.

Summary: The activation behavior of NOX molecules at a chlorine vacancy (ClV) on the BiOCl (001) surface was systematically studied using first-principles calculations. It was found that after introducing ClV on BiOCl (001) surfaces, all NOX molecules showed excellent activities with longer chemical bonds. This work provides fundamental insight into the activation of small molecules on defect-rich surfaces of ternary compound catalysts.

Facet-dependent topo-heterostructure formed by BiOCl and ZnCr-LDH and its enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

Yaowen Cui et al.

Summary: Interface regulation plays a crucial role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors like BiOCl and LDH. When LDH is grown on the BiOCl (010) facet, even a small amount can significantly increase the activity due to the prolonged lifetime of electron-hole pair. However, an excessive amount of LDH covering the BiOCl (010) facet will decrease the activity of the hybrid material.

Fast preparation of oxygen vacancy-rich 2D/2D bismuth oxyhalides-reduced graphene oxide composite with improved visible-light photocatalytic properties by solvent-free grinding

Jianhua Hou et al.

Summary: Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I) with two-dimensional/two-dimensional (2D/2D) heterostructures have been successfully prepared without using any solvent recently. The BiOX/RGO heterostructures exhibit oxygen-rich vacancies and a short fabrication time of 15 min, promoting carrier separation efficiency and visible-light absorption. The photocatalytic performance of BiOX/RGO composites in degrading organic pollutants was significantly enhanced, showing improved degradation rates compared to pure BiOX.

Variable dimensional structure and interface design of g-C3N4/BiOI composites with oxygen vacancy for improving visible-light photocatalytic properties

Jianhua Hou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the preparation of variable dimensional structured BiOI with surface oxygen vacancies, forming the p-n heterojunction necessary for high-performance photocatalysis. Different dimensional structures of BiOI composites with g-C3N4 were investigated, revealing the optimized combination with 2D/2D structure showed the best photocatalytic performance.

Boosting carrier dynamics of BiVO4 photoanode via heterostructuring with ultrathin BiOI nanosheets for enhanced solar water splitting

Can Li et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient strategy for boosting bulk charge transport of BiVO4 through impregnation of BiVO4 in BiOI nanosheets precursor solution was demonstrated. The introduction of oxygen vacancies in the bulk of BiVO4 and the built-in electric field in BiVO4-BiOI synergistically improved the photocurrent density. This facile impregnation strategy is believed to pave an alternative way to the development of highly efficient BiVO4 photoanode.

Synergetic effects of Bi5+ and oxygen vacancies in Bismuth(V)-rich Bi4O7 nanosheets for enhanced near-infrared light driven photocatalysis

Jin Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a near-infrared light driven Bi5+-rich Bi4O7 photocatalyst with significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for pollutant removal. The formation of an intermediate band in the Bi4O7 structure improves optical absorption and carrier separation efficiency, while the presence of oxygen vacancies and Bi5+ accelerates the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers.

Emerging alternative for artificial ammonia synthesis through catalytic nitrate reduction

Derek Hao et al.

Summary: Artificial catalytic synthesis of ammonia has become a hot research frontier, with potential to replace the Haber-Bosch process and reduce global CO2 emissions. Using nitrites or nitrates as nitrogen sources can significantly improve catalytic efficiency and eliminate water pollution, providing an emerging alternative for ammonia synthesis. However, more focus is needed on reducing nitrate and nitrite contamination.
