Microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of the hot extruded Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloys

B. N. Du et al.

Summary: A new Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy for degradable orthopedic implants was developed and the influences of Zn and Y content on microstructures and mechanical behaviors were discussed. Results showed that increasing Y content can enhance the tensile and compressive strength of the alloy, while decreasing elongation.

Effects of Homogenization Treatment on the Microsegregation of a Ni-Co Based Superalloy Produced by Directional Solidification

Zijian Zhou et al.

Summary: A series of homogenization treatments were conducted on a Ni-Co based superalloy prepared through directional solidification to reduce microsegregation. Element segregation characteristics and microstructural evolution were investigated using various microscopy techniques, showing non-uniform distribution of elements, with W and Ti exhibiting the greatest tendency of microsegregation. Optimal single-stage homogenization process was determined to be at 1180 degrees C for 2 h, with a kinetic diffusion model built to estimate the diffusion coefficients of W and Ti.

Microstructural evolution of a Ni-Co based superalloy during hot compression at γ′ sub-/super-solvus temperatures

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: The effects of strain rate on the microstructural evolution and deformation mechanism of a Ni-Co based superalloy were investigated through isothermal compression tests. It was found that the primary gamma' particles played a significant role in accelerating and retarding dynamic recrystallization (DRX), while discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) was identified as the dominant mechanism.

Effect of Ta Addition on the Microstructure and Tensile Properties of a Ni-Co Base Superalloy

C. Z. Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of adding tantalum on the tensile properties of a nickel-cobalt base superalloy in a range of temperatures. Results show that tantalum addition improves the alloy's strength at all temperatures and enhances plasticity at 760°C. Microstructural observations reveal that tantalum promotes the precipitation of specific phases and carbides, influencing the alloy's deformation and fracture mechanisms. Moreover, the alloy's strength and plasticity enhancement at 760°C can be attributed to a combination of factors including increased grain boundary strength, reduced resolved shear stress, and twinning promotion.
