Microstructure Analysis and Thermal Characteristics of NiTiHf Shape Memory Alloy with Different Composition

S. Buytoz et al.

Summary: Improving the microstructural analysis of shape memory alloys, particularly NiTiHf alloys, is crucial for various applications. Adding more hafnium in NiTiHf alloys can increase phase transformation temperatures but decrease enthalpy change for endo/exothermic processes. Oxidation studies reveal different microstructures, such as needle-like shapes and plate-like Ti-rich microstructures, depending on the composition of Ni and Hf elements in the alloys.

NiTiHf shape memory alloys as phase change thermal storage materials

N. Hite et al.

Summary: Motivated by recent advancements, NiTiHf SMAs were explored as solid-solid PCMs with high temperature capability, exhibiting high FOM values, high transformation enthalpy, and potential for specific thermal energy storage applications through composition control. This allows NiTiHf alloys to fill previously empty regions of FOM vs. transformation temperature property space for high FOM PCMs.

Processing and Scalability of NiTiHf High-Temperature Shape Memory Alloys

O. Benafan et al.

Summary: The development of melting and processing techniques for NiTiHf high-temperature shape memory alloys at the laboratory scale has shown significant success and repeatability. Different melting techniques used to process the alloys resulted in slightly different compositions that affected the mechanical and functional properties of the alloys. Experimentation with various melting techniques allowed for adjustments in the melting process to optimize alloy properties.
