Repair of aluminum 6061 plate by additive friction stir deposition

L. Peter Martin et al.

Summary: Solid-state volumetric repair using additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) of aluminum alloy was performed to fill grooves machined into the surface of a plate, showing effective mixing of material up to a depth of 3.1-3.5 mm. Practical limitations for repair depth using the current parameters, materials, and tool design were discussed.

Tracing plastic deformation path and concurrent grain refinement during additive friction stir deposition

Mackenzie E. J. Perry et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation fundamentals of additive friction stir deposition using tracer-based feed material to uncover the plastic deformation path and concurrent grain structure evolution. The results demonstrate significant grain refinement during initial material feeding via geometric dynamic recrystallization, but no further grain refinement during steady-state deposition. The findings provide insights into developing future deformation processing-based additive technologies.

Deformation-based additive manufacturing of 7075 aluminum with wrought-like mechanical properties

Jake K. Yoder et al.

Summary: This study successfully prints high-strength 7075 aluminum alloy using a deformation-based additive process, achieving excellent mechanical properties. The method consistently achieves wrought-like mechanical properties without the need for adding new elements or nanoparticles.

A meshfree computational framework for the numerical simulation of the solid -state additive manufacturing process, additive friction stir-deposition (AFS- D)

G. G. Stubblefield et al.

Summary: In this work, a fully coupled thermo-mechanical meshfree approach is developed for simulating the solid-state layer-by-layer additive manufacturing process AFS-D. The method uses a Lagrangian reference frame and solid mechanics formulation to resolve elastic and plastic strains. The simulation results are compared against experimental results for calibration, revealing temperature and strain rate gradients in the AFS-D process.

Effect of parallel deposition path and interface material flow on resulting microstructure and tensile behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy fabricated by additive friction stir deposition

B. J. Phillips et al.

Summary: This paper examined the effect of overlapping parallel additive depositions on microstructure and mechanical properties in Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFS-D). The study found that parallel layers of AA6061 can be successfully deposited via the AFS-D technique, exhibiting a strong metallurgical bond across the parallel layers.
