Planned behavior and social capital: Understanding farmers' behavior toward pressurized irrigation technologies

Gracia Maria Lanza Castillo et al.

Summary: The study proposes a socio-psychological model to examine the factors influencing the switch from traditional to pressurized irrigation among farmers. The results show that social pressure and social capital play important roles in promoting the adoption of pressurized irrigation technologies.

Simulating the effects of agricultural production practices on water conservation and crop yields using an improved SWAT model in the Texas High Plains, USA

Yong Chen et al.

Summary: A calibrated SWAT model was used to evaluate the impacts of agricultural practices on water balances and crop yields, showing that greater irrigation depth may reduce seasonal irrigation requirements but increase soil water content, surface runoff, and percolation. Delayed planting of corn and sorghum may decrease hydrologic parameters, while early planting may increase these variables.

Mapping maize crop coefficient Kc using random forest algorithm based on leaf area index and UAV-based multispectral vegetation indices

Guomin Shao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the potential of leaf area index (LAI) and multispectral vegetation indices (VIs) obtained by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for estimating the crop coefficient (Kc) value for maize on a field scale. The results showed that the RFR algorithm effectively estimated maize Kc values based on ground-based LAI and UAV-based VIs, which could provide a potential solution for the distribution of water use and precision irrigation on a field scale.

Assimilation of soil moisture and canopy cover data improves maize simulation using an under-calibrated crop model

Yang Lu et al.

Summary: Parameter calibration for crop model simulation can be time-consuming, but this study introduced a data assimilation framework to reduce this requirement for maize simulation using AquaCrop. By uniformly scaling phenological parameters and assimilating soil moisture and canopy cover observations, model performance was significantly improved. Joint assimilation of soil moisture and canopy cover resulted in better yield estimates, demonstrating the potential for accurate yield prediction through monitoring soil moisture and canopy status.
