Removal of emerging contaminants (bisphenol A and antibiotics) from kitchen wastewater by alkali-modified biochar

Ye Tang et al.

Summary: The alkali-modified biochar proved to be effective in removing emerging contaminants from complex kitchen wastewater systems, demonstrating high adsorption capacities and being mainly controlled by chemisorption and monolayer adsorption. Initial pH values had significant effects on the adsorption of some contaminants, while environmental factors had minimal impact.

Removal of potentially toxic metal by biochar derived from rendered solid residue with high content of protein and bone tissue

Jong-Hwan Park et al.

Summary: This study produced RACR-C by pyrolyzing pig carcass residues and evaluated their Cd adsorption characteristics. The Cd adsorption capacity of RACR-C is influenced by factors such as initial dosage, pH, and co-existing metals, requiring comprehensive management. Adsorption of Cd by RACR-C involves various mechanisms, including adsorption by functional groups, precipitation of Cd-P, and ion exchange reactions.

Preparation of graphite-like biochars derived from straw and newspaper based on ball-milling and TEMPO-mediated oxidation and their supersorption performances to imidacloprid and sulfadiazine

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Graphite-like biochars were prepared by pyrolyzing modified newspaper and maize straw, showing great graphitization and specific surface areas. The biochars adsorbed IMI and SUL mainly through pore-filling, H-bonding, and electrostatic interactions. The combination of ball-milling and oxidation modification method provided efficient adsorbents for removing hydrophilic pesticides and antibiotics from polluted water.

Changes in adsorption mechanisms of radioactive barium, cobalt, and strontium ions using spent coffee waste biochars via alkaline chemical activation: Enrichment effects of O-containing functional groups

Jaegwan Shin et al.

Summary: The study found that chemically activated spent coffee waste biochars with NaOH showed higher efficiency and stronger chemical adsorption in the removal of radioactive species. The adsorption process of radioactive species in SCWB-P and SCWB-A was mainly influenced by oxygen functional groups, with physisorption dominating in SCWB-P and chemisorption playing a crucial role in SCWB-A.

A novel, efficient and sustainable magnetic sludge biochar modified by graphene oxide for environmental concentration imidacloprid removal

Yongfei Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel graphene oxide supported magnetic sludge biochar composite (GO/CoFe2O4-SBC) was synthesized and evaluated for the removal of imidacloprid (IMI) at environmental concentration level. The outstanding adsorption performance of GO/CoFe2O4-SBC was attributed to factors such as pore filling, pi-pi conjugation, and functional groups interaction. The composite showed high sustainable adsorption capacity, easy separability, and environmental security with low leaching concentrations of Fe and Co.

Upcycling olive oil cake through wet torrefaction to produce hydrochar for water decontamination

Shareefa Ahmed Alshareef et al.

Summary: Oil extraction from drupes generates tons of olive oil cake (OOC) as a solid waste residue, leading to concerns about its safe disposal. A method of converting waste OOC to a value-added hydrochar (HC) for aqueous environment remediation was proposed, with promising results in removing methylene blue (MB) through chemical modification.

Adsorption of radioactive strontium by pristine and magnetic biochars derived from spent coffee grounds

Jaegwan Shin et al.

Summary: The FeCl3 pretreatment effectively magnetized the pristine SCG biochars, significantly increasing their specific surface area and total pore volume. However, it did not significantly improve the adsorption efficiency of Sr2+. The adsorption process was mainly controlled by monolayer adsorption, indicating that the FeCl3-pretreated SCG biochars could be recovered effectively through magnetic separation.
