Atmospheric emissions of PCDDs and PCDFs in China from 1960 to 2014

Ye Huang et al.

Summary: This study quantified emissions of 17 toxic PCDD/Fs congeners in China from 1960 to 2014, revealing a historical increasing trend in national PCDD/F emissions until around 1980 when emissions stabilized due to decreased emissions from cement production and waste burning in certain regions. Positive correlations of emission densities with population and GDP densities were found spatially, while emission densities showed a decreasing trend from cities to rural areas, with per capita emissions showing the opposite trend.

A comprehensive emission inventory of hazardous air pollutants from municipal solid waste incineration in China

Zhiqiang Fu et al.

Summary: The release of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants in China has raised concerns. This study established a comprehensive emission inventory of HAPs from MSWI plants in China from 2006 to 2017. The results showed that HAPs emissions initially increased and then stabilized due to the implementation of stricter emission standards. The emissions were concentrated in developed coastal provinces and cities. Continuous improvement in pollution control devices and MSWI management is crucial to minimize the harmful impacts of HAPs.

Global status of dioxin emission and China's role in reducing the emission

Rongrong Lei et al.

Summary: This study compiled the global status of dioxin emissions across 150 countries/regions, using China as an example. It found that open burning processes were the most important sources of dioxins globally, with emissions in developed countries remaining low and stable, while those in developing countries remained high. China's dioxin emissions have been stable around 9 kg TEQ, with industries such as metal production and waste incineration having significant potential for reduction.

Persistent organic pollutant cycling in forests

Ping Gong et al.

Summary: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are internationally regulated due to their toxicity and environmental impact. Forests act as a filter for POPs, absorbing and storing them from the atmosphere, but factors like soil organic carbon content and climate can influence their distribution and storage. Deforestation and forest fires threaten the ability of forests to sequester POPs, impacting their global cycling. Regular large-scale observations in forests are needed to better understand the burden of POPs in the environment.
