Low strength wastewater anammox start-up by stepwise decrement in influent nitrogen: Biofilm formation mechanism and mathematical modelling

Rui Xiao et al.

Summary: The lab-scale mainstream anammox moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was successfully started in 120 days with stepwise decrement in influent nitrogen concentration, showing the initial colonization by Candidatus Jettenia and filamentous fermenter Anaerolineaceae potentially mediated by hydrophobic interaction and type IV pilus. A novel mainstream anammox biofilm development (MABD) model was constructed to describe biofilm growth, population dynamics, and nitrogen removal performance, providing insights for the design and operation of mainstream anammox processes towards higher biofilm biomass and nitrogen removal efficiency.

Molecular composition of halobenzoquinone precursors in natural organic matter in source water

Jinxiu Lou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the correlation between molecular weight and HBQs generation of river NOM. It was found that HBQs were approximately 9 times more abundant in NOM fractions larger than 50 kDa compared to low molecular weight fractions. The presence of lignin-like and highly oxygen compounds in NOM was found to play critical roles in the formation of HBQs. Derivatizing certain compounds in NOM reduced HBQs yields significantly.

Fermentation liquid as a carbon source for wastewater nitrogen removal reduced nitrogenous disinfection byproduct formation potentials of the effluent

Fang Zheng et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of different carbon source addition on effluent dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) concentration and the formation potentials of nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) in wastewater. The results show that using sludge alkaline fermentation liquid (SAFL) as the carbon source increases the effluent DON concentration but reduces the formation potentials of N-DBPs.

Autotrophic and mixotrophic metabolism of an anammox bacterium revealed by in vivo13C and2H metabolic network mapping

Christopher E. Lawson et al.

Summary: This study experimentally resolved the central carbon metabolism of the anammox bacterium 'Kuenenia stuttgartiensis', confirming predicted metabolic pathways and revealing instances where genomic predictions did not align with in vivo metabolic fluxes. The findings provide a foundation for understanding the carbon metabolism of anammox bacteria at a systems-level and inform future studies on factors governing their function and niche differentiation in ecosystems.

Occurrence and Distribution of Disinfection Byproducts in Domestic Wastewater Effluent, Tap Water, and Surface Water during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in China

Zhigang Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and distribution of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in domestic wastewater effluent, tap water, and surface water in China. Results showed that DBP concentrations were higher in wastewater effluents than tap water and surface water, with haloacetic acids (HAAs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) being the most dominant categories. Additionally, the study revealed that HAAs in wastewater effluents had higher risk quotient values for green algae.

Weizhi Yan et al.

Summary: This study used high-throughput sequencing technology to investigate the microbial community structure and diversity in a cattle farm wastewater treatment plant, revealing significant impacts of different stages on microbial community structure. The results also showed that total phosphorus is the most important factor regulating microbial community composition, and nitrogen metabolic pathway and transformation mechanism were elucidated.

Dynamics of dissolved organic matter and dissolved organic nitrogen during anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment processes

Gang Tang et al.

Summary: Using FT-ICR MS and fluorescence spectroscopy, this study examined the transformation of DOM and DON during A2O processes, showing that anaerobic degradation reduced the mass of influent DOM/DON, anoxic denitrified DON and generated DOM, and oxic processes led to DOM mineralization and ammonia nitrogen-DON conversion. Increases in aromaticity and unsaturation degree after A2O processes were associated with Proteobacteria (positively) and Bacteroidetes (negatively), providing important insights into DOM/DON dynamics in wastewater treatment plants.

Spatial variation of dissolved organic nitrogen in Wuhan surface waters: Correlation with the occurrence of disinfection byproducts during the COVID-19 pandemic

Leyun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and its association with disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in surface water in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that DON was responsible for the formation of N-nitrosamines in surface water, especially in lakes where DON concentration was high. Trihalomethanes (THMs) were found to be the most prevalent DBPs in the surface waters, followed by N-nitrosamines and haloacetonitriles (HANs).
