Kill three birds with one stone: Iron-doped graphitic biochar from biogas residues for ammonium persulfate activation to simultaneously degrade benzo[a]pyrene and improve lettuce growth

Xiaoying Li et al.

Summary: The synthesized Fe-impregnated biochar (FBC) coupled with ammonium persulfate (APS) exhibited excellent performance in catalytic degradation of Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). The factors influencing the degradation of BaP included pyrolysis temperature of biochar, initial pH, as well as the dosages of FBC and APS. The FBC-APS system efficiently degraded BaP at a wide pH range of 3-11, proposed degradation mechanisms included radical and non-radical pathways.

Biochar-based activation of peroxide: multivariate-controlled performance, modulatory surface reactive sites and tunable oxidative species

Jia Wang et al.

Summary: Biochar has emerged as a promising peroxide activator due to its chemical-saving/facile synthesis processes, high efficiency, and tunable physicochemical properties. However, there are serious knowledge gaps and controversies regarding the mechanism to modulate reactive sites on its surface and dominated reaction pathways. Insight understanding of the activation processes will significantly advance its application in practical wastewater treatment.

Can biochar and hydrochar be used as sustainable catalyst for persulfate activation

Mohamed Faisal Gasim et al.

Summary: There has been a surge of interest in using biomass-derived char as an activator for persulfate to remove anthropogenic pollutants. While char has shown potential as a persulfate activator, its sustainability over prolonged application is unclear. This review assesses the knowledge gap related to the sustainability of char as a persulfate activator and provides potential research directions.

In-situ soil remediation via heterogeneous iron-based catalysts activated persulfate process: A review

Yixin Cao et al.

Summary: The accumulation of multiple organic pollutants in the soil poses a huge threat to ecological systems and human health. Iron-based catalysts, known for their environmental friendliness, wide applicability, and low cost, are commonly used in sulfate radicals-based advanced oxidation processes for soil remediation. This paper focuses on the progress of Fe-based catalysts in the treatment of organically contaminated soil using advanced oxidation processes. It discusses the activation process of persulfate and the generation of free radicals for soil remediation. Additionally, it explores the changes in physicochemical properties of soil after treatment and investigates the challenges associated with the use of Fe-based catalysts in soil remediation.

Why does sludge-based hydochar activate peroxydisulfate to remove atrazine more efficiently than pyrochar?

Liangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that sludge-derived hydrochar and pyrochar have different effects on atrazine removal under PDS activation. Hydrochar has a more significant enhancement on ATZ removal in the PDS system compared to pyrochar. This is because humic substances in HC play a crucial role in ATZ degradation, providing more O-1(2).

Greenhouse Gas Inventory Model for Biochar Additions to Soil

Dominic Woolf et al.

Summary: Stabilizing the global climate requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions and removing CO2 from the atmosphere. GHG accounting protocols are needed to quantify the mitigation impact of CO2 removal practices like biochar sequestration. Research shows that the carbon content of biochar varies with feedstock and production conditions, with a significant portion remaining unmineralized in soil for long-term sequestration.
