In situ remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater by ZVI-PRB and the corresponding indigenous microbial community responses: a field-scale study

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) successfully reduced hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) concentrations through chemical reduction, impacting the indigenous microbial community structure. Competitive growth among Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria was observed in the PRB area, while Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria were enriched downgradient, indicating further bio-reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This bio-reduction could serve as a secondary mechanism for prolonged removal of Cr(VI) from groundwater, influenced by environmental factors such as pH, dissolved oxygen, Cr(VI) levels, oxidation-reduction potential, and temperature.

Denitrification performance of nitrate-dependent ferrous (Fe2+) oxidizing Aquabacterium sp. XL4: Adsorption mechanisms of bio-precipitation of phenol and estradiol

Liang Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a nitrate-dependent ferrous oxidizing strain XL4 belonging to Aquabacterium was selected and optimized using the Box-Behnken design. The results showed that strain XL4 had a nitrate removal efficiency of 91.41% under specific conditions. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectra and X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the bio-precipitation produced by strain XL4 mainly consisted of Fe3O4 and FeO(OH), and had a high adsorption capacity for phenol and estradiol.

Enhanced simultaneous nitrification and denitrification via adding N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) in integrated floating fixed-film activated sludge process

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: The study introduced exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) to enhance simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) under low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio and low dissolved oxygen (DO) level. AHLs significantly increased polysaccharide contents of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), strengthening bacterial adhesion and improving biofilm structure and function. The efficient SND was attributed to the improved biofilm caused by AHLs and the enrichment of mixotrophic denitrifying genera participating in quorum sensing.

Comparison of currently available PFAS remediation technologies in water: A review

Dushanthi M. Wanninayake

Summary: The remediation of PFASs in the environment is challenging due to limitations in field applications of existing techniques and the unique physiochemical characteristics of various PFASs. Advanced techniques such as electrochemical, sonochemical, AOPs, plasma, and novel hybrid techniques show promise for PFAS removal, but more research is needed to optimize their effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
