Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in Fish from European Lakes: Current Contamination Status, Sources, and Perspectives for Monitoring

Sara Valsecchi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the concentrations of perfluorocarboxylic and perfluorosulfonic acids in fish from several lakes in the European subalpine area. The results suggest that PFAS contamination in lake fish is generally correlated with the degree of urbanization of the lake catchment, and the possibility of harmonizing monitoring protocols was tested.

Legacy and alternative per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in a subtropical marine food web from the Beibu Gulf, South China: Fate, trophic transfer and health risk assessment

Chang-Gui Pan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic magnification of legacy and alternative PFAS in subtropical marine food webs in the Beibu Gulf, South China. The results showed that most PFAS exhibited low bioaccumulation levels, with only a few substances showing trophic magnification. Overall, the risk of PFAS exposure through consumption of marine organisms was found to be relatively low.

Occurrence and dietary intake of Perfluoroalkyl substances in foods of the residents in Beijing, China

Xueping Wang et al.

Summary: A study on the dietary intake of PFASs and their alternatives among residents of Beijing, China, found that linear PFASs were mainly present in fish, while PFBS was mainly found in vegetables, and PFAS alternatives were detected in freshwater and marine fish. Although the intake of PFASs was below the recommended levels by EFSA, further evaluation of the risks associated with alternatives is necessary.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in livestock and game species: A review

Clare Death et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals with resistance to environmental breakdown, leading to concerns for human, animal, and environmental health. The main source of human exposure to PFAS is through dietary intake, but understanding of exposure in terrestrial animals is limited. More research is needed to define PFAS concentrations in livestock and game species. Livestock and game animals may be exposed to PFAS through various sources, and the contribution of these exposures to PFAS concentrations in food products is not well studied. Further studies on toxicokinetics and health effects in animals are necessary to address the potential risks associated with PFAS exposure.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in sediment and edible fish from the Eastern Red Sea

Aasim M. Ali et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) were detected in sediment and edible fish from the Saudi Arabian Red Sea, with wastewater treatment plant effluents being the main source. PFOS was the most abundant compound, and PFAS levels and patterns varied between fish tissues. The dietary intake of certain PFASs in fish from Jeddah exceeded safety thresholds, posing a potential health risk to humans.

Perfluoroalkyl Chemicals and Male Reproductive Health: Do PFOA and PFOS Increase Risk for Male Infertility?

Pheruza Tarapore et al.

Summary: PFAS are synthetic chemicals that have been in existence for over 70 years and are currently being phased out. However, they persist in the environment and have harmful effects on health, particularly affecting male reproductive health by lowering testosterone levels and semen quality. Studies indicate that PFAS exposure is associated with endocrine disruption on the reproductive system, exhibiting non-monotonic dose responses.

PFAS accumulation in indigenous and translocated aquatic organisms from Belgium, with translation to human and ecological health risk

Lies Teunen et al.

Summary: Despite specific restrictions, PFAS are still present in aquatic ecosystems in Flanders, Belgium. Biomonitoring studies found different PFAS concentrations and profiles in indigenous fish and translocated mussels, showing biomagnification of some PFAS in the food chain and biodilution of others. Human health risk was identified for eels, while ecological risk of PFOS exceeded standards at around half of the sampling locations.
