Biological Detoxification of Mycotoxins: Current Status and Future Advances

Lu Liu et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins, highly toxic metabolites produced by fungi, pose a significant threat to human and animal health. Worldwide contamination of food and feed with mycotoxins leads to substantial financial losses annually. Biological methods for mycotoxin degradation have shown great potential and advantages. This review highlights the important advances in the biological removal of mycotoxins over the past decade, including discussions on the chemical structures, toxicity, and innovative strategies such as using novel probiotics. Prospects for the development of multifunctional approaches using recombinant enzymes and microbial consortia for simultaneous mycotoxin removal are also discussed.

Alternaria leaf spot of broccoli caused by Alternaria alternata in Bangladesh

Sayma T. Nira et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the pathogen responsible for Alternaria leaf spot on broccoli and evaluate the effectiveness of fungicides against it. The pathogen was identified as Alternaria alternata based on morphological and molecular analysis. The conidia of the isolates had distinct characteristics, and the maximum growth of the pathogen was observed at 30 degrees C and pH 6.0. Tilt 250 WC showed the highest inhibitory potential against the mycelial growth of A. alternata at a low concentration.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Activities of Novel Vanadium(IV) and Cobalt(II) Complexes

Tadewos Damena et al.

Summary: In this study, novel cobalt and vanadium complexes were synthesized from an (E)-2-(((2-((2-hydroxyethyl) amino) quinolin-3-yl) methylene) amino)ethan-1-ol ligand (L), cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate, and vanadyl(IV) sulfate in methanolic solutions. The ligand and complexes were characterized using various spectroscopic and physical techniques, and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities were evaluated. The results showed that the complexes exhibited better activities than the free ligand.

Structural, molecular docking computational studies and in-vitro evidence for antibacterial activity of mixed ligand complexes

A. Z. El-Sonbati et al.

Summary: A novel bis-bidentate azo dye ligand and its metal complexes were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. The mixed ligand complexes of Cr(III), Mn(II), and UO2(II) showed higher activity compared to the primary ligands.

Determination of patulin in products containing dried fruits by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay technique Patulin in dried fruits

Anna Przybylska et al.

Summary: The era of globalization has led to an increase in cross-continental food export and import, potentially contributing to food pollution. Mycotoxin presence in food is a common issue, with limited information on the impact of herbal mixture composition. The study aimed to detect patulin in commercial products, highlighting the need for further research on the influence of herbal mixtures on mycotoxin levels.

A Dual Role of Vanadium in Environmental Systems-Beneficial and Detrimental Effects on Terrestrial Plants and Humans

Ewa Hanus-Fajerska et al.

Summary: Vanadium plays a complex role in land systems, with the potential for both positive and harmful effects on organisms. Proper levels of vanadium ions can stimulate plant growth and development, while excess vanadium can contaminate soil and slow down plant biomass growth. Research teams are focused on the role of vanadium in the environment, particularly its dualistic influence on plants.

Control of Penicillium expansum by an Epiphytic Basidiomycetous Yeast

Simona Marianna Sanzani et al.

Summary: Postharvest biocontrol agents, such as the carotenoid-producing basidiomycetous yeast strain RY1, have shown promising potential in controlling postharvest pathogens like Penicillium expansum and reducing the production of mycotoxins like patulin. The mode of action of this yeast strain involves competition for nutrients and production of antifungal volatiles, making it a potential biocontrol agent for use after harvest.
