Anti-diabetic effects of bioactive peptides: recent advances and clinical implications

Caleb Acquah et al.

Summary: Diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, is a significant global health issue with increasing prevalence worldwide. Healthy diet, physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and medication are effective strategies to prevent and control diabetes. Majority of diabetic patients reside in countries with poor healthcare systems and financial infrastructure, making diabetes management cost-prohibitive. Bioactive peptides derived from food proteins have the potential to be used as nutraceuticals and drugs in combating metabolic disorders without known complications. Coupled with lifestyle modifications, bioactive peptides can influence enzyme activities to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Pepper weevil, Anthonomus eugenii (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) suppression on jalapeno pepper using non-host insect repellent plants

Victoria O. Adeleye et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of intercropping non-host insect repellent plants with jalapeno pepper to suppress pepper weevil population. The results showed that the non-host plant treatments reduced the number of pepper weevil adults on jalapeno plants, infested fruit, and pepper weevils in infested fruit, but had no significant impact on marketable yield.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Metabolomics Approach for the Analysis of Major Legume Sprouts Coupled to Chemometrics

Mohamed A. Farag et al.

Summary: Legume sprouts, rich in phytochemicals, were analyzed using NMR for metabolite fingerprinting, identifying various metabolites for quality control purposes. Different legume sprouts showed unique metabolite profiles, with isoflavones in Cicer sprouts and 4-hydroxyisoleucine in Trigonella sprouts. Trigonelline was a common alkaloid found in all sprouts, with the highest levels in Trigonella sprouts, indicating its potential role in seed germination. The aromatic NMR region data provided better classification power due to variations originating from secondary metabolites.

Lentil and Fava Bean With Contrasting Germination Kinetics: A Focus on Digestion of Proteins and Bioactivity of Resistant Peptides

Sara Bautista-Exposito et al.

Summary: Germination improves legume protein digestibility by breaking down seed structure and hydrolyzing proteins and anti-nutrients. Seed coat polyphenol content plays a crucial role in the duration of germination and its impact on protein digestibility and bioactivity. Sprouted legumes showed increased protease activity, decreased levels of phytic acid, trypsin inhibitors, and tannins, as well as significant proteolysis and generation of peptides and amino acids. The study suggests that sprouting enhances protein digestibility and health-promoting potential of lentils and fava beans, with rapid sprout growth leading to more significant changes in protein content.

Summary: By testing the overexpression of functionally defective pump components in wild type E. coli cells, it was found that none of the mutants demonstrated the expected dominant negative effect, even at high expression levels. The assembly of the AcrAB-TolC complex seems to possess a proof-read mechanism that effectively eliminates the formation of futile pump complexes.
