Small-Scale Isotropy and Ramp-Cliff Structures in Scalar Turbulence

Dhawal Buaria et al.

Summary: Passive scalars advected by three-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence exhibit a fundamental anomaly in odd-order moments due to characteristic ramp-cliff structures that violate small-scale isotropy. By developing a simple model, it is demonstrated how small-scale isotropy is restored in the large Schmidt number limit, suggesting a possible correction to the Batchelor length scale in the scalar field.

Karman-Howarth solutions of homogeneous isotropic turbulence

L. Djenidi et al.

Summary: The study shows that there are differences in the solutions of the Karman-Howarth equation between forced turbulence and decaying turbulence, mainly due to the generation of large-scale motions in forced turbulence. As the Reynolds number increases, the impact of forcing on small scales decreases, allowing the KHEq solutions to agree well with spectrally based solutions at scales unaffected by forcing.

Turbulence is an Ineffective Mixer when Schmidt Numbers Are Large

Dhawal Buaria et al.

Summary: In this study, the advection-diffusion equation for a stochastically stationary passive scalar theta was solved in conjunction with forced 3D Navier-Stokes equations using direct numerical simulations. The findings suggest that turbulence becomes an ineffective mixer when the Schmidt number Sc is large. Specifically, the mean scalar dissipation rate decreases as 1/log Sc, and sharp fronts with increased density and large oscillations on larger scales are observed, leading to reduced mixing. Additionally, the scalar structure functions in the inertial-convective range exhibit saturation with respect to the moment order, with the saturation exponent approaching unity as Sc increases.

Modeling the third-order velocity structure function in the scaling range at finite Reynolds numbers

L. Djenidi et al.

Summary: The proposed model for the third-order velocity structure function in finite Reynolds number homogeneous and isotropic turbulence is based on a gradient type hypothesis and eddy-viscosity formulation. It differs from previous models by not making assumptions about the behaviors of second-order and third-order velocity structure functions in the scaling range, allowing for modeling in the presence or absence of intermittency phenomenology. This model predicts the same infinite Reynolds number asymptotic behavior for the second-order velocity structure function and shows the effect of finite Reynolds number on the scaling range, deviating from a power-law behavior.
