Anthraquinone (AQS)/polyaniline (PANI) modified carbon felt (CF) cathode for selective H2O2 generation and efficient pollutant removal in electro-Fenton

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: A novel binder-free AQS/PANI@CF cathode for selective H2O2 generation and efficient pollutant removal in electro-Fenton was fabricated, showing high stability and repeatability. The cathode achieved a high H2O2 concentration of 83.3 mu mol L-1 and a RhB degradation efficiency of 98.8% within 60 minutes. The main generated reactive radicals were identified through quenching experiments and EPR tests, and a plausible mechanism of the cathode applied electro-Fenton process was proposed. This work serves as a reliable reference for subsequent investigations.

Changes in molecular dissolved organic matter and disinfection by-product formation during granular activated carbon filtration by unknown screening analysis with Orbitrap mass spectrometry

Thanadul Chantarasrisuriyawong et al.

Summary: This research investigates the removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the minimization of disinfection by-product (DBP) formation by using pilot-scale coal-and coconut-based granular activated carbon filtrations. The results show that the coal-based activated carbon is more effective in the removal of dissolved organic carbon and prolongs adsorption longer than the coconut-based activated carbon. Different types of compounds are selectively removed by the two activated carbon filters. A biofilm is developed on the activated carbon filters after 60 days of filtration, leading to the formation of microbial products. Chlorination results in a decrease in many organic compounds and the formation of chlorinated DBPs.

Remediation of heavy metal polluted waters using activated carbon from lignocellulosic biomass: An update of recent trends

Anh Tuan Hoang et al.

Summary: This review provides an update on utilizing biomass waste-derived activated carbon for adsorbing common pollutants like Cr, Pb, Cu, Cd, Hg, and As, with a focus on different mechanisms of heavy metal adsorption and key parameters affecting adsorption performance. The use of microwave technique for activation is gaining popularity due to its ability to ensure uniform energy distribution and enhance surface area, although chemical activation remains preferred for its ease of operation, lower cost, and shorter preparation time.

Anthraquinone acted as a catalyst for the removal of triphenylmethane dye containing tertiary amino group: Characteristics and mechanism

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, anthraquinone (AQ) was found to act as an effective catalyst for the removal of triphenylmethane dye containing tertiary amino group (TDAG). The catalytic reactivity of AQ towards TDAG removal was found to be greater than hydro-quinone, which was supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. AQs exhibited a TDAG removal efficiency and rate of approximately 100% and 0.3583 min ???1 , respectively, within 20 min. The generation of superoxide radical (O 2 ??? ???) through the catalytic reduction of oxygen molecule (O 2 ) by AQ was found to contribute to the effective removal of TDAG. The electrophilic attack of the O 2 ??? ??? radical on TDAG was identified as the driving force for the dye degradation process. The study revealed the synergistic effects of H + and O 2 ??? ??? in significantly enhancing the rate and efficiency of dye removal, surpassing those achieved through persulfate oxidation.

Bacterial community change and antibiotic resistance promotion after exposure to sulfadiazine and the role of UV/H2O2-GAC treatment

Lixin Huo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of sulfadiazine on bacterial community and antibiotic resistance genes in drinking water distribution systems. Addition of sulfadiazine to sand filtered water increased bacterial activity and extracellular polymeric substances production, promoting biofilm formation and enhancing bacterial resistance to chlorine. However, UV/H2O2-GAC filtration efficiently removed sulfadiazine, resulting in minimal changes in bacterial community and ARGs promotion.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between chlorine and PAC in DBP formation, revealing that PAC can react with chlorine to form THMs and HAAs, with PAC adsorption playing a critical role in DBP control. Additionally, the reaction products formed between PAC and chlorine may be more toxic than traditional DBPs.

Zheng-Yu Dong et al.

Summary: This study provided a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, detection, and control of odor substances derived from drinking water chlor(am)ination disinfection. The formation mechanisms of several typical types of disinfection-derived odor substances were summarized, along with control strategies such as adsorption, chemical oxidation, and combined processes like ozonation and biological activated carbon processes. Challenges and possible future research directions in this field were also discussed and proposed.
