Efficient activation of ferrate(VI) by colloid manganese dioxide: Comprehensive elucidation of the surface-promoted mechanism

Mengfan Luo et al.

Summary: Current research is focused on enhancing the oxidation activity of ferrate (Fe(VI)) by introducing additional energy or reducing agents. Interestingly, colloid manganese dioxide (cMnO(2)) is found to promote Fe(VI) removal of various contaminants through a surface-promoted pathway. The study suggests that high-valent Fe species are the main oxidants in the cMnO2-Fe(VI) system, and Fe(VI) can combine with vacancies in cMnO(2) to generate Fe(IV)/Fe(V). The decay products of Fe(VI) play a vital role in further enhancing the formation of Fe(IV) and Fe(V). Furthermore, cMnO(2) shows superior catalytic stability in complex waters, making it a promising reductant for Fe(VI) activation.

Ferrate(VI) pretreatment of water containing natural organic matter, bromide, and iodide: A potential strategy to control soluble lead release from PbO2(s)

Jiaqi Liu et al.

Summary: This study introduces the use of Fe(VI) to reduce the generation of soluble lead in water containing corrosion product PbO2(s). Soluble lead release was found to be mainly controlled by natural organic matter in water, with reduced feasibility at lower pH values. Fe(VI) pretreatment showed potential in inhibiting the reaction of NOM with PbO2(s) and decreasing soluble lead concentrations in water.

Membrane fouling performance of Fe-based coagulation-ultrafiltration process: Effect of sedimentation time

Yanyan Ding et al.

Summary: This study showed that both membrane fouling behavior and the performance of coagulation integrated UF processes can be influenced by both the density and thickness of a cake layer formed during the processes, as well as the sedimentation time and flocs characteristics. A critical threshold of 30 minutes was observed at the lab-scale, which determines whether direct coagulation-UF (CUF) outperforms conventional coagulation-sedimentation-UF (CSUF) depending on whether the main factor affecting membrane fouling is the cake layer density or thickness.

Preliminarily comparative performance of removing bisphenol-S by ferrate oxidation and ozonation

Shaoqing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that both ozone and ferrate can achieve over 99% reduction in BS concentration and up to 22.5% reduction in DOC when dosed at 0.036 mM. Vibrio fisheri toxicity decreased after ozonation or ferrate oxidation, and mass spectra analysis revealed proposed degradation pathways and identified oxidation products (OPs). The research showed that ferrate treatment is comparable to ozonation in removing BS, and further studies are needed to explore BS removal in different water compositions and to establish more comprehensive operational databases for ferrate oxidation and/or ozonation.

Summary: The E-HOC process with bipolar connection (BE-HOC) demonstrated higher removal efficiency for wastewater treatment and pharmaceutical removal compared to monopolar connection (ME-HOC), with lower energy consumption. Ozone promoted polymerization reactions during coagulant hydrolysis in the E-HOC process, enhancing catalytic and coagulation performance. The BE-HOC configuration and dual-coagulant mode facilitated the formation of polymeric hydrolyzed coagulant species, along with increased center dot OH formation and active reaction sites, as observed through XPS analysis.
