Assessing and predicting phosphorus phytoavailability from sludge incineration ashes

Claude-Alla Joseph et al.

Summary: The study found that using ash from municipal sludge incineration as phosphorus fertilizer can enhance ryegrass P uptake, with effectiveness varying depending on the origin of the sludge and P solubility. In clay soil, SIA had greater P effectiveness than RP, while in sandy loam soil, they were similar. The oxalate extraction method was shown to be a better predictor of SIA P availability compared to the commonly used NAC method.

Utilization of acid-washed sewage sludge ash as sand or cement replacement in concrete

Lisbeth M. Ottosen et al.

Summary: The research explores the use of acid-washed sewage sludge ash (AW-SSA) in concrete, finding that directly replacing the sand fraction by 10% is not feasible due to high water demand. However, grinding the AW-SSA and using it as cement replacement yields positive results in terms of late strength development. This process suggests an interesting potential for transforming SSA into two products: phosphorous extraction and material for partially replacing cement in concrete.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Uptake, accumulation, and translocation mechanisms of steroid estrogens in plants

Xingcai Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the uptake, accumulation, and translocation mechanisms of 17 beta-E2 in wheat plants, revealing the pathways and factors influencing the uptake of SEs by plants. The results indicated that both adsorption and active uptake were involved in the accumulation of 17 beta-E2 in wheat roots, with chlorophyll and protein contents positively correlated with uptake. Additionally, competitive inhibition was observed when 17 beta-E2 and EE2 coexisted, suggesting a potential risk of SE release even after plant absorption.

Land application of sewage sludge incinerator ash for phosphorus recovery: A review

Persephone Ma et al.

Summary: Recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge incinerator ash (SSA) can help redirect valuable nutrients back into the food system, but requires thorough research on SSA properties, phosphorus availability, contaminant concentrations, and behavior in soil. Approaches for P recovery from SSA must take into account individual characteristics of the material and regional requirements and regulations for land application. In this review, the history of P recovery from SSA is discussed along with research on characterization, contaminants, P availability, and land application of SSA.

Marine mussel-based biomarkers as risk indicators to assess oceanic region-specific microplastics impact potential

Chi-Yun Chen et al.

Summary: The overall impact potential of MPs on marine mussels in the South Pacific Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and South Atlantic Ocean was found to be low, while MPs from the North Pacific Ocean were likely to pose a potential threat. This highlights important implications for understanding the relationships between environmental MPs and the exposure risk for marine organisms in different oceanic regions worldwide.

Distribution, behaviour, bioavailability and remediation of poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in solid biowastes and biowaste-treated soil

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Aqueous film-forming foam and biowastes are major sources of PFAS in soil, with plant uptake of PFAS through soil application of biowastes being a pathway for animal and human exposure. Remediation of PFAS in biowastes and soils treated with these biowastes can be achieved through various methods including prevention through source control, soil washing, phytoremediation, immobilization, and destruction. This review presents the distribution, bioavailability, and remediation of PFAS in soil receiving solid biowastes such as biosolids, composts, and manure.

Land Application of Biosolids in Europe: Possibilities, Con-Straints and Future Perspectives

Andrea Gianico et al.

Summary: The agricultural use of good quality sludge in Europe represents a value-added route to ensure growth sustainability, but specific regulations are required to minimize health issues and environmental risks. The legislative framework on sludge agricultural use lacks harmonization among EU Member States, and challenges such as the fate of emerging micropollutants and microplastics in sludge-amended soils, as well as public health concerns during the COVID-19 epidemic, need to be considered.

Summary: This paper discusses the impacts of treated wastewater and sewage sludge reuse on the accumulation of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in agricultural lands and crops, emphasizing the importance of exposure assessment and dose-response assessment in risk assessment. The study also identifies research gaps in current knowledge, highlighting the need for further investigation into soil conditions affecting gene transfer, environmental factors affecting the migration of antibiotic resistance genes in soil and crops.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on removal of organic pollutants present in anaerobically stabilized sewage sludge

Jaroslav Mosko et al.

Summary: The study focused on using slow pyrolysis to treat organic pollutants in stabilized sewage sludge, finding that temperatures above 600 degrees Celsius effectively removed the majority of organic pollutants. It was proposed that high temperature (>600 degrees Celsius) slow pyrolysis can satisfactorily remove organic pollutants from resulting sludge-char, making it a safe soil improver.

Structural and chemical changes of sludge derived pyrolysis char prepared under different process temperatures

Jaroslav Mosko et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis of sewage sludge at 400-800 degrees C showed that increasing temperature led to higher phosphate and metaphosphate content, and lower reduced P species content; higher temperature also increased sulfide content and decreased sulfate and sulfite content; the effect on nitrogen species was minimal. Raman spectroscopy and NMR revealed significant contribution of graphite and (poly) aromatic hydrocarbons to the organic structure of sludge-chars.

Transfer of sulfidized silver from silver nanoparticles, in sewage sludge, to plants and primary consumers in agricultural soil environment

Pauline Courtois et al.

Summary: The study shows that consumer products containing silver nanoparticles can release silver into the environment through wastewater, leading to accumulation in sewage sludge which can then be spread on agricultural land. The transfer of silver from silver nanoparticles and sulfidized silver into plants and primary consumers was measured, with species-specific bioaccumulation observed. Sulfidized silver was found to be less available than silver from original silver nanoparticles, potentially impacting food webs through chronic exposure.
