Contemporary Risk of Surgery in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease: A Meta-Analysis of Population-Based Cohorts

Lester Tsai et al.

Summary: The patient-level risks of surgery in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have significantly decreased over time, with a 5-year cumulative risk of surgery of 7.0% in ulcerative colitis and 18.0% in Crohn's disease in contemporary cohorts. This decrease may be related to early detection and/or better treatment.

Hypoalbuminaemia, Not Biologic Exposure, Is Associated with Postoperative Complications in Crohn's Disease Patients Undergoing Ileocolic Resection

Summary: This study found that preoperative biologics in Crohn's disease patients undergoing ileocolic resection were not significantly associated with 90-day postoperative intra-abdominal septic complications. Low preoperative albumin levels were independently associated with such complications, indicating its predictive value in infection risk assessment.
