The brain of the tree pangolin (Manis tricuspis). IX. The pallial telencephalon

Aminu Imam et al.

Summary: A cyto-, myelo-, and chemoarchitectonic analysis of the pallial telencephalon of the tree pangolin showed that its organization is similar to that of other mammals, especially carnivores. The tree pangolin's claustrum exhibits a combination of insular and laminar architecture, and the endopiriform nuclear complex contains three nuclei. The white matter interstitial cells resemble those observed in other mammals, while the intracortical white matter has a distinct laminated organization with parvalbumin immunostaining. The cerebral cortex of the tree pangolin has indistinct laminar boundaries and pyramidalization of the neurons in layers 2 and 4.

The brain of the tree pangolin (Manis tricuspis). VII. The amygdaloid body

Aminu Imam et al.

Summary: The cytoarchitecture and chemoarchitecture of the amygdaloid body of the tree pangolin were described, including the different nuclei within it. The overall structure was similar to other mammalian species, with the only variation being the appearance of the intercalated islands.

The brain of the tree pangolin (Manis tricuspis). VIII. The subpallial telencephalon

Aminu Imam et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed analysis of the subpallial telencephalon in tree pangolins, revealing a high degree of similarity with other mammals, indicating evolutionary conservation. The functions associated with subpallial nuclei in other mammals may be directly applicable to tree pangolins, albeit with consideration for specific stimuli related to the life history requirements of the species.
