When Elasticity Affects Drop Coalescence

Pim J. Dekker et al.

Summary: The addition of polymers significantly changes the breakup of drops, with long threads connecting the two droplets appearing. Elasticity affects drop coalescence, revealing an elastic singularity but hardly affecting the temporal evolution of the bridge. These results are explained using a novel viscoelastic similarity analysis and are relevant for drops created in biofluids, coating sprays, and inkjet printing.

Coalescence of Microscopic Polymeric Drops: Effect of Drop Impact Velocities

Vishal Sankar Sivasankar et al.

Summary: This paper employs DNS method to study the three-dimensional, axisymmetric coalescence of microscale, power-law-obeying, and shear-thinning polymeric liquid drops impacting a solid substrate. The study reveals the impact of drop velocity on coalescence dynamics, with qualitatively similar behavior observed for different Weber number values. Detailed scaling laws for bridge growth in the coalescence process are also provided, showing distinct behavior for different stages of coalescence as a function of Weber number.

Elastocapillary interactions of thermoresponsive microgels across the volume phase transition temperatures

Shensheng Chen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the interactions between microgels exhibit different dynamic characteristics in various states, such as the formation of capillary bridges at high temperatures leading to strong attraction. By establishing an elastocapillary model, the interactions between microgels are successfully described and simulation data are accurately predicted.
