Enhanced performance of a Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material formed through Taylor flow synthesis and surface modification with Li2MoO4

Lakshmipriya Musuvadhi Babulal et al.

Summary: A novel continuous Taylor flow reactor was used to prepare a high-energy-density, highly stable LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material, with further modification through surface coating with Li2MoO4. The modified cathode material demonstrated lower cation mixing, enhanced electrochemical performance, and improved capacity retention over cycles. The prepared and modified LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 products were characterized through in situ XRD and in operando microcalorimetry for volume changes, lattice parameters, and thermal stabilities.

An effective strategy to control thickness of Al2O3 coating layer on nickel-rich cathode materials

Die Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient coating approach was developed based on organic/water two-phase system to prepare Al2O3-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 with uniform and controlled thickness of the coating layer. It was demonstrated that the electrochemical performance of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 strongly correlates to the thickness of the Al2O3 coating layer. With optimized thickness, the Al2O3-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 showed good initial discharge capacity and superior capacity retention upon cycling.

Capacity Fading Mechanisms in Ni-Rich Single-Crystal NCM Cathodes

Hoon-Hee Ryu et al.

Summary: The study found that despite the high resistance to microcracking, the electrochemical performance of single-crystal NCM cathodes is inferior to polycrystalline NCM cathodes in terms of capacity and cycling stability. During cycling, the lithium concentrations in single-crystal NCM cathodes become spatially inhomogeneous, leading to the coexistence of phases with different unit cell dimensions within a single particle, which affects lithium ion diffusion and causes rapid capacity fading.
