Reconstructing Arctic Sea Ice over the Common Era Using Data Assimilation

M. Kathleen Brennan et al.

Summary: In this study, Arctic sea ice concentration over the last two millennia was reconstructed using a data assimilation method. The reconstructions showed good agreement with satellite observations and independent reconstructions. The study found that the decline in Arctic sea ice extent over the past millennium is unprecedented.

Partitioning uncertainty in projections of Arctic sea ice

David B. Bonan et al.

Summary: Improved understanding of the sources of uncertainty in Arctic sea ice projections is crucial for assessing the impacts of changing Arctic environment. This study finds that internal variability, model structure, and emissions scenario all play significant roles in predicting Arctic sea-ice area. Internal variability has a larger impact on uncertainty in the short term, while emissions scenario becomes dominant over longer time scales. Additionally, there is a considerable dependency of model uncertainty on the season, with larger uncertainties in winter months.

Summary: Internal climate variability plays a crucial role in the abundance and distribution of phytoplankton in the global ocean. This study demonstrates the impact of internal climate variability on the interpretation of long-term trends in ocean chlorophyll and shows a wider range of possible trends in chlorophyll concentration in subpolar regions compared to subtropical regions.
