Diversity of the Global Teleconnections Associated with the Madden-Julian Oscillation

Guosen Chen

Summary: A recent study found diverse propagation patterns of the Madden Julian oscillation (MJO) during boreal winter, with each pattern corresponding to distinct global teleconnections mainly due to the diversity of tropical heating patterns. The study suggests that the teleconnections in different MJO groups exhibit varying linear responses to the MJO's diabatic heating, with the fast and slow MJO showing higher linear skill compared to the jumping and standing MJO.

A distinct sub-seasonal modulation in the Atlantic-originated atmospheric teleconnection influence on East Asian monthly climates

Yoo-Geun Ham et al.

Summary: This study examines the strong sub-seasonal modulation in the atmospheric teleconnection between the North Atlantic and East Asia during boreal winter. It finds that negative precipitation anomalies over the mid-latitude Atlantic induce a wave packet, leading to cold temperatures in northern China, Korea, and Japan. In mid-January, the strongest transient vorticity forcing (TVF) over the mid- to high-latitude Atlantic strengthens the anticyclone over central Eurasia and facilitates the development of the Siberian High, resulting in cold temperatures in East Asia.

Classification of Wintertime Atmospheric Teleconnection Patterns in the Northern Hemisphere

Minju Kim et al.

Summary: The energetics of major atmospheric teleconnection patterns in the Northern Hemisphere winter were examined to investigate the roles of baroclinic and barotropic energy conversions in their growth. The patterns were classified into three types: meridional dipole, wave, and hybrid, based on characteristics of energetics and horizontal structures. The primary factor differentiating these patterns is the baroclinic energy conversion of available potential energy from climatology to the eddy field associated with teleconnections.

Seesawing of Winter Temperature Extremes between East Asia and North America

Mi-Kyung Sung et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that abnormally warm winter weather in East Asia can lead to the onset of extremely cold weather in North America approximately one week earlier, mediated by the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO). Intense thermal advection over East Asia triggers the growth of the NPO, while changes in circulation positively contribute to the growth and maintenance of the NPO.
