Characterization of PBI/Graphene Oxide Composite Membranes for the SO2 Depolarized Electrolysis at High Temperature

Summary: This work presents the preparation of polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes using graphene oxide (GO) as organic filler. The composite membranes exhibit enhanced proton conductivity and water management at high temperature. Moreover, the incorporation of GO improves the chemical stability and phosphoric acid retention capability of the membranes. The results also demonstrate the potential use of the composite membranes in SO2-depolarized electrolysis for hydrogen production.

Summary: Renewable energy storage and conversion into hydrogen using phosphoric acid-doped PBI membranes at high temperatures has been studied, showing that the thermally cured membrane outperforms the standard one. It is advised not to operate above 130 degrees C to prevent sulfur production. Increasing temperature has a significant influence on the charge transfer resistance of the system.
