Recent advances in the biological valorization of citrus peel waste into fuels and chemicals

Deokyeol Jeong et al.

Summary: Citrus peel waste (CPW) emerges as a promising and sustainable option for biorefinery due to its industrial potential of biological valorization into fuels and chemicals, despite the specific technical difficulties in fermenting CPW, such as high pectin content. Recent advances in the metabolic engineering of yeast and other microbial strains for fermenting CPW-derived sugars to produce value-added products, like ethanol and mucic acid, offer potential for industrially viable CPW-based biorefinery with improved fermentation efficiency and diversified product profiles.

Enhancement of bioethanol production by a waste biomass-based adsorbent from enzymatic hydrolysis

Jinju Hou et al.

Summary: Alkaline pretreatment is an efficient method for bioethanol production by destroying the lignocellulose structure of rice straw. The use of waste biomass-based adsorbent AEPA(250) optimized the detoxification of ferulic acid in the hydrolysate, resulting in improved fermentation parameters and bioethanol production. The optimized detoxified fermentation (ODF) system demonstrated greater potential for bioethanol fermentation compared to non-detoxified fermentation (NDF) system.
