An integrated anaerobic digestion and microbial electrolysis system for the enhancement of methane production from organic waste: Fundamentals, innovative design and scale-up deliberation

Amudha Thanarasu et al.

Summary: In the near future, renewable energy generation from electromethanogenesis is expected to become more cost-effective. By integrating anaerobic digestion with microbial electrolysis system, it is possible to upgrade biogas to 100% methane for power generation. Further research and scaling up of the microbial electrolysis system in anaerobic digestion is essential to achieve 100% methane production for power generation.

Revealing the link between evolution of electron transfer capacity of humic acid and key enzyme activities during anaerobic digestion

Xiqing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the electron transfer capacity (ETC) of HAs increased during anaerobic digestion process at both mesophilic (671-1479 mu mol gHA-1) and thermophilic (774-1506 mu mol gHA-1) conditions. The ETC was positively correlated with bacterial community in hydrolytic and acidogenic phases, but negatively correlated with archaeal community in methanogenic phase. Furthermore, HAs formed under thermophilic conditions had a greater influence on key enzyme activities than those formed under mesophilic conditions.

Optimization of a newly developed electromethanogenesis for the highest record of methane production

Huihui Zhou et al.

Summary: The optimized AnGS-EM system achieved a maximum methane production rate of 202.15 L CH4/m(2)cat(proj)/d, which is over 3 times higher than the maximum reported value so far. The methane production rate increased within a certain range with the buffer concentration, applied voltage, and bicarbonate concentration. Excessive applied voltage and carbonate concentration not only led to resource waste but also inhibited methanogen performance.

Efficiency and key functional genera responsible for simultaneous methanation and bioelectricity generation within a continuous stirred microbial electrolysis cell (CSMEC) treating food waste

Frank Koblah Quashie et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the continuous stirred microbial electrolysis cell (CSMEC) efficiently treats high strength food waste with superior COD removal efficiency and biogas production compared to the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). CSMEC outperforms CSTR by 1.52 times and harbors dominant phyla and microbial populations in its community.
