Impacts of regional water shortage information disclosure on public acceptance of recycled water - evidences from China's urban residents

Caixia Hou et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of public environmental cognitions on public acceptance of recycled water, finding that regional water shortage information disclosure and awareness of water environment protection positively influence public acceptance of recycled water, while perceptions of health risks have a negative impact. Additionally, regional water shortage information disclosure can boost public environmental cognitions and ultimately enhance public acceptance of recycled water.

Monitoring dissolved organic matter in wastewater and drinking water treatments using spectroscopic analysis and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry

Weixin Shi et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is essential in determining water quality, with monitoring techniques like absorption spectroscopy and FT-ICR-MS providing insights into DOM composition. The complexity and diversity of DOM pose challenges in water treatment, highlighting the importance of understanding DOM composition for optimizing treatment processes.

How Much of the Total Organic Halogen and Developmental Toxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Water Might Be Attributed to Aromatic Halogenated DBPs?

Jiarui Han et al.

Summary: The study developed an effective method with ultraperformance liquid chromatography to analyze the DBP mixture from chlorination of bromide-rich raw water, separating them into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. The results showed that aromatic fractions accounted for a significant portion of the TOX and developmental toxicity in the original chlorinated water samples, indicating that the overall developmental toxicity of chlorinated water is mainly attributed to aromatic halo-DBPs with high bioconcentration potential.

Molecular characterization of transformation and halogenation of natural organic matter during the UV/chlorine AOP using FT-ICR mass spectrometry

Xiaoxue Ruan et al.

Summary: UV/chlorine process is effective in removing micro-pollutants but may lead to NOM transformation and DBPs formation, with ClO, Cl, and HO promoting NOM transformation and causing increased formation of Cl-DBPs. UV/chlorine AOP generated more CHON-containing compounds and higher CHOCl compounds compared to dark chlorination, with different chlorine substitution (SR) and addition reactions (AR) occurring based on precursor properties.

Formation and control of C- and N-DBPs during disinfection of filter backwash and sedimentation sludge water in drinking water treatment

Yunkun Qian et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of disinfection conditions, water quality parameters, and bromide concentration on controlling the formation of disinfection byproducts during the disinfection process. Extended chlorination and increased chlorine doses were found to increase DBP formation and toxicity, while chloramine disinfection promoted the formation of N-DBPs.

Characteristics of trihalomethane and haloacetic acid precursors in filter backwash and sedimentation sludge waters during drinking water treatment

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the precursors of THMs and HAAs in filter backwash water and sedimentation sludge water, revealing that hydrophilic organic matter was the main precursor of THMs and HAAs, while hydrophobic organic matter also played an important role in the formation of HAAs. Corresponding treatment strategies should be considered to avoid the formation of THMs and HAAs.

Unravelling molecular transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter in UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate, and UV/chlorine processes based on FT-ICR-MS analysis

Bingliang Zhang et al.

Summary: Ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) show promising potential in advanced treatment of municipal secondary effluents. The study utilized Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and multiple statistical analysis to investigate the transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) in UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate (UV/PS), and UV/chlorine treatments. Results indicate that UV/chlorine treatment has the highest capability for reducing acute toxicity and specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA(254)), suggesting its potential for advanced wastewater treatment.
