Endogenous formaldehyde scavenges cellular glutathione resulting in redox disruption and cytotoxicity

Carla Umansky et al.

Summary: Formaldehyde (FA) not only exerts cytotoxicity through DNA damage, but also triggers cellular redox imbalance by reacting with glutathione (GSH). GSH synthesis and the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase 5 (ADH5) play crucial roles in preventing FA cytotoxicity. These findings are important for patients with mutations in FA detoxification systems and suggest potential therapeutic benefits of thiol-rich antioxidants.

Optimization and validation of direct gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for simultaneous quantification of ten short-chain acids in rat feces

Jin-Hao Zhu et al.

Summary: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) play important roles in maintaining health and treating disease. A direct gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was developed in this study for simultaneous quantification of ten SCFAs, including formic acid, in rat feces. The method was optimized and successfully applied to compare the content of SCFAs in feces between normal and immunosuppressed animal models.

Holistic quality evaluation of Hibisci Mutabilis Folium by integrating UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS chemical profiling and UPLC-TQ-MS/MS quantification approaches

Cheng-Ying Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive evaluation method for the quality of the traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Hibisci Mutabilis Folium (HMF), was developed using UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS chemical profiling and UPLC-TQ-MS/MS quantification. The study identified and quantified various components in HMF samples and found significant differences in the contents of major components between commercial samples and self-prepared samples. The findings suggest that the holistic quality of HMF commercial samples is inconsistent, and harvesting period and drying method may be the main factors affecting the quality consistency.

Differences in Intestinal Metabolism of Ginseng Between Normal and Immunosuppressed Rats

Jin-Hao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study revealed significant differences in the intestinal metabolism of ginseng between normal and immunosuppressed rats, as well as alterations in gut microbiota composition. These findings suggest that changes in specific gut bacteria intensity may partly contribute to the variances in ginseng metabolism in immunosuppressed rats, providing valuable scientific data for the rational use of ginseng as both a dietary supplement and herbal medicine.

Yao Tang et al.

Summary: A new method for quantitating eight reactive carbonyl species (RCS) was developed and validated in this study, which was applied to assess RCS levels in mouse samples under different dietary conditions. The results showed that a high fat diet significantly increased RCS levels in mice, while rosemary extract was able to inhibit the accumulation of RCS.
