Parental death by external causes during childhood and risk of psychiatric disorders in bereaved offspring

Lisa Victoria Burrell et al.

Summary: This study found that parental death due to external causes significantly increases the risk of various specific psychiatric disorders and comorbidity in offspring, especially following parental suicide and accidental deaths. Gender and age of loss did not have a significant impact on risk, and generally, there was no significant interaction with gender of the bereaved offspring.

Dissecting the Shared Genetic Architecture of Suicide Attempt, Psychiatric Disorders, and Known Risk Factors

Niamh Mullins et al.

Summary: A genome-wide association study identified significant genetic loci associated with suicide attempts, particularly one locus on chromosome 7 which is implicated in risk-taking behavior, smoking, and insomnia. The study also revealed strong genetic correlations between suicide attempts and psychiatric disorders, as well as other nonpsychiatric traits like smoking, pain, and lower socioeconomic status. Conditioning on psychiatric disorders reduced the genetic correlations between suicide attempts and psychiatric disorders, indicating a shared biology with nonpsychiatric risk factors.

Home, school, and community violence exposure and emotional and conduct problems among low-income adolescents: the moderating role of age and sex

Summary: This study found an association between violence exposure and emotional/conduct problems, with age and sex moderating this relationship. Community violence victimization was associated with emotional problems in girls, while severe physical punishment was linked to conduct problems in younger individuals.

Summary: This study revealed significant associations between socioeconomic factors and psychiatric disorders, and identified candidate genes interacting with socioeconomic factors through a genome-wide gene-by-environment interaction study. These findings help us gain a deeper understanding of the genetic associations between socioeconomic factors and psychiatric disorders.

Sex-specific interaction between cortisol and striato-limbic responses to psychosocial stress

Gina-Isabelle Henze et al.

Summary: Although women and men differ in their overall stress reactivity, there are scarce studies on sex differences in stress regulation in the brain. The study found that men and women have different responses to psychosocial stress, with men exhibiting higher cortisol levels but no sex differences in affect or heart rate responses. The results suggest that there are differential stress reactions for women and men in identical structures, with a need to consider quantitative predictors such as sex-specific cortisol increases when exploring neural response differences.

Sex-stratified gene-by-environment genome-wide interaction study of trauma, posttraumatic-stress, and suicidality

Summary: Epidemiologic studies show a connection between trauma, posttraumatic stress, and increased severity of suicidal behavior. Genetic and environmental interactions play a role in modifying the effects of potentially modifiable traumatic experiences on genetic risk for suicidality.

On the Genetic and Environmental Relationship Between Suicide Attempt and Death by Suicide

Alexis C. Edwards et al.

Summary: The study examined the genetic and environmental etiology of suicide attempts and deaths using Swedish national registry data, finding that there is partial overlap in genetic factors between the two, but also significant differences based on gender and age. These differences should be taken into account when developing prevention strategies and risk prediction algorithms.

Prevalence and correlates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in preadolescent children: A US population-based study

Hannah R. Lawrence et al.

Summary: The study found that suicidal ideation and attempts are high among preadolescent children, especially for males, sexual minority youth, those with low family income, and youth with comorbid psychopathology. Treatment utilization for suicidal ideation and attempts is relatively low, particularly among females, Black individuals, and Hispanic youth.
