Coarse-Grained Simulations of Solute Diffusion in Crosslinked Flexible Hydrogels

Manuel Quesada-Perez et al.

Summary: This work computes the longtime diffusion of a solute in a chemically crosslinked and flexible hydrogel using a coarse-grained model of a polymeric network. The relevance of chain flexibility becomes important when the polymer volume fraction and the solute size increase. The results show that solute particles can moderately diffuse in flexible hydrogels even when their diameter is comparable to the mesh size. The diffusion coefficients obtained here are in good agreement with previously reported experimental data, without the need for any adjustable parameter.

Enhanced Heterogeneous Diffusion of Nanoparticles in Semiflexible Networks

Ziyang Xu et al.

Summary: Through large-scale molecular simulations and theoretical analysis, it was found that nanoparticles in polymer networks with semiflexible strands exhibit enhanced heterogeneous diffusion characterized by hopping dynamics, with the hopping energy barrier approximating to linear dependence on confinement parameters in the regime of moderate rigidity. This nonmonotonic feature is attributed to the competition between conformation entropy and bending energy regulated by chain rigidity.

Dynamics of Nanoparticles in Polydisperse Polymer Networks: from Free Diffusion to Hopping

Valerio Sorichetti et al.

Summary: Using molecular dynamics simulations, this study investigates the static and dynamic properties of spherical nanoparticles embedded in a disordered and polydisperse polymer network. The study identifies three different dynamical regimes for the nanoparticles based on the confinement parameter C. Comparison with existing theories reveals discrepancies in describing the heterogeneous dynamics of NP diffusion at intermediate time scales.
