Minimal quantum thermal machine in a bandgap environment: non-Markovian features and anti-Zeno advantage

Meng Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes a minimal model of a quantum thermal machine, in which a driven two-level working medium is embedded in an environment with a spectrum possessing bandgaps. By using approximate and exact treatments, the researchers characterize this thermal machine in the deep quantum domain. They find that the spectral response and power output of the machine exhibit different features for different modulation rates, with fast modulation leading to power boost of strictly quantum origin and enhanced spectral reservoir response.

Non-Markovian quantum Otto refrigerator Dynamical operation through finite-time thermal coupling

Michael Wiedmann et al.

Summary: The study focused on a quantum refrigerator operating according to an Otto cycle, discussing the periodic steady-state dynamics and key thermodynamic quantities. A particular advantage of this study is the explicit access to the work required for interacting with thermal reservoirs. The domains in which the device operates in refrigerator mode were characterized.

Quantum Heat Engines with Complex Working Media, Complete Otto Cycles and Heuristics

Ramandeep S. Johal et al.

Summary: This paper examines the performance of a quasi-static quantum Otto engine based on two spins of arbitrary magnitudes subject to an external magnetic field and coupled via an isotropic Heisenberg exchange interaction. It has been shown that the interaction between spins can enhance cycle efficiency, but the necessary conditions governing engine performance and the relevant upper bound for efficiency are still unknown for the general case of arbitrary spin magnitudes. By analyzing extreme case scenarios, heuristics are formulated to infer the necessary conditions for engines with uncoupled as well as coupled spin models.

Entropy and information flow in quantum systems strongly coupled to baths

Nikhil Seshadri et al.

Summary: By considering von Neumann expression and utilizing nonequilibrium Green's function techniques, the paper derived bath and energy resolved expressions for entropy, entropy production, and information flows. The formulation of these expressions in terms of system degrees freedom is convenient for simulating thermodynamic characteristics of open nonequilibrium quantum systems. Standard NEGF is used for noninteracting systems while Hubbard NEGF is employed for interacting systems in numerical simulations within generic junction models.
