Recent advances in amine catalyzed aldol condensations

Bert Biesemans et al.

Summary: Aminated materials play a crucial role as aldol condensation catalysts, facilitating the reaction through an enamine mechanism. The reaction environment and the addition of small amounts of water are important factors. The development of water tolerant (bio)polymer supported amine catalysts has opened up opportunities for further catalyst development.

Acid-base bifunctional SBA-15 as an active and selective catalyst for synthesis of ethyl α-cyanocinnamate via Knoevenagel condensation

Jimmy Nelson Appaturi et al.

Summary: SBA-15-Alanine is a mesoporous catalyst with dual acid-base functionality, demonstrating high catalytic activity and selectivity in Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde and ethyl cyanoacetate. The catalyst shows good stability and reusability under novel non-microwave instant heating conditions, suggesting potential as a replacement for base catalysts in condensation reactions.

Optimizing the surface distribution of acid sites for cooperative catalysis in condensation reactions promoted by water

Gengnan Li et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that water clusters around acid sites can bridge with nearby ketone molecules to promote aldol condensation reactions. However, when the distance between two acid sites exceeds a certain value, the presence of water no longer promotes the reaction and significantly decreases the efficiency of bond polarization of the ketone. This work provides insights into how solvent molecules can bridge isolated active sites to enable cooperative catalysis at the nanoscale.
