The role of surface oxide thickness and structure on the corrosion and nickel elution behavior of nitinol biomedical implants

Shari Nathanson Rosenbloom et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of nitinol is strongly dependent on the nature of the surface oxide formed during processing. Studies have shown a correlation between oxide thickness and nickel ion release, with thicker oxides releasing more nickel. The composition of the surface oxide may play a significant role in influencing the corrosion performance of nitinol.

Salt Heat Treatment and Passivation to Improve the Corrosion Resistance of Nitinol (Ni-Ti)

Inho Bae et al.

Summary: Corrosion of nitinol (NiTi) is a major factor in implantable material failure, and testing according to international guidelines is essential. Heat treatment in a salt furnace rather than an air furnace is preferred, and the passivation process can significantly improve corrosion resistance by suppressing oxidation.
