Negligible surface uplift following foundering of thickened central Tibetan lower crust

Yunchuan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study used clinopyroxene compositions and zircon Hf-O isotopes to investigate the formation mechanism of Eocene adakitic rocks from the Qiangtang block in central Tibetan Plateau. Results suggest that the origin of these rocks is likely from foundered and eclogitized lower crust rather than subducted upper crust. The mantle-like zircon isotopes support a mafic source hypothesis. Surface uplift in central Tibet may not be significant due to weak crust as a response to lithosphere removal.

Petrology of the Machangqing Complex in Southeastern Tibet: Implications for the Genesis of Potassium-rich Adakite-like Intrusions in Collisional Zones

Yang Shen et al.

Summary: In collisional zones, high-K2O adakite-like intrusions are typically associated with post-collisional events and have higher K2O contents and K2O/Na2O ratios compared to those in subduction zones. The Machangqing complex in southeastern Tibet showcases the presence of various intrusions with unique geochemical characteristics, such as potassic-ultrapotassic lamprophyres enriched in light rare earth elements and adakite-like intrusions displaying high SiO2 content and low Y and total REE contents. These intrusions are believed to have formed through processes involving partial melting of enriched lithospheric mantle and magma mixing between different melt types. The model proposed suggests a three-stage process for the formation of these intrusions, with a focus on the interaction between potassic-ultrapotassic and adakite-like melts in a continental collision setting.

Eocene-Oligocene Crustal Thickening-Collapse of the Eastern Tibetan Plateau: Evidence from the Potassic Granitoids in SW China

Qiyu Gou et al.

Summary: The study presents new geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic data for Cenozoic potassic granitoids in eastern Tibet, highlighting the tectonic evolution of the region. The different groups of potassic granitoids analyzed have distinct geochemical and isotopic characteristics, suggesting varied sources and processes involved in their formation. The findings indicate a complex magmatic history in the eastern Tibetan Plateau linked to the India-Asia collisional event.

Mantle flow: The deep mechanism of large-scale growth in Tibetan Plateau

Zengqian Hou et al.

Summary: This study discovered a giant high-heat flow zone in the Tibetan Plateau, leading to the continuous distribution of rock groups. The subduction of the Indian continental lithosphere-mantle triggered an increase in Asian continental asthenosphere flow, causing vertical upwelling of mantle channels and providing deep heat for the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau.
