Hall-Effect Thrusters for Deep-Space Missions: A Review

Archit Bapat et al.

Summary: This article studies the influence of several parameters on the performance of Hall-effect thrusters (HETs) and provides insights into optimal configurations. The choice of thruster geometry, magnetic field, wall material, and propellant significantly affect the performance and lifespan of HETs. Magnetically shielded thrusters yield improved performance and lifespan by reducing erosion and secondary electron emission. Boron nitride and borosil (a mixture of boron nitride and silica) are identified as the most appropriate wall materials. Xenon has been the preferred propellant for HETs, while other potential propellants include Krypton, Bismuth, and Iodine.

Fast gas heating and kinetics of electronically excited states in a nanosecond capillary discharge in CO2

G. Pokrovskiy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fast gas heating in a pulsed nanosecond capillary discharge in pure CO2 under the conditions of high specific deposited energy and high reduced electric fields. Experimental measurements of specific deposited energy, reduced electric field, and gas temperature as functions of time are conducted. The radial distribution of the electron density is analyzed experimentally. Numerical modeling in the framework of 1D axial approximation is used to analyze the quenching effect of excited atoms and molecules, leading to heat release at a sub-microsecond time scale.

CO2 conversion via coupled plasma-electrolysis process

Arunkumar Pandiyan et al.

Summary: Surplus renewable electricity can be used to convert CO2 into CO, which is the basis of liquid fuels, enabling large-scale energy storage and the synthesis of fuel for long-haul transportation. High-temperature electrolysis and plasmolysis are two promising technologies. However, both face challenges. High-temperature electrolysis has high yield and efficiency but requires electrode materials to break the carbon-oxygen double bond. Plasmolysis, on the other hand, has similar efficiency and is easy to scale up, but gas separation and recuperation are necessary due to the mixing of CO, O-2, and residual CO2. This study demonstrates the coupling of the two processes to overcome the main bottleneck of plasmolysis and achieve efficient CO2 conversion into valuable CO feedstock.

Nanosecond pulsed discharge dynamics during passage of a transient laminar flame

Colin A. Pavan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between a nanosecond repetitively pulsed dielectric barrier discharge and a transient laminar flame. It reveals that the hot combustion products have a significant impact on the discharge. The pulse repetition frequency and the cooling rate of the combustion products determine the transition between uniform and filamentary discharge regimes, with no noticeable influence from the reduced electric field. These findings highlight the importance of considering the changes in discharge properties due to combustion processes in plasma-assisted transient combustion systems.

Summary: A four-temperature kinetic-theory approach for modeling vibrationally non-equilibrium carbon dioxide flows was developed, utilizing averaged state-resolved relaxation rates for improved accuracy and efficiency. The study found excellent agreement between the four-temperature model and state-to-state solutions, while the traditional three-temperature model led to loss of accuracy. Discussions on numerical efficiency and ways for improvement were also included.
