Atomistic interpretation of extra temperature and strain-rate sensitivity of heterogeneous dislocation nucleation in a multi-principal-element alloy

Shi-Cheng Dai et al.

Summary: The incipient plasticity of crystals is influenced by pre-existing crystalline defects, which are formed during materials fabrication and processing and closely related to the mechanical properties. Through atomistic exploration and continuum-level mechanistic modeling, this study investigates the nucleation behavior of heterogeneous dislocations in different materials and reveals the extra thermal softening and strain-rate sensitivity in a multi-principal-element alloy, which can be attributed to the high total entropy and small activation volume of the alloy.

Self-Organized Growth of 111-Oriented (VNbTaMoW)N Nanorods on MgO(001)

Hicham Zaid et al.

Summary: Refractory high-entropy alloy nitride (VNbTaMoW)N layers were successfully grown on single-crystalline MgO(001) via ultrahigh vacuum direct current magnetron sputtering in Kr/N-2 gas mixtures. The alloy nitride film exhibits a dense columnar microstructure near the substrate-film interface with the growth of rather unusual 111-textured nanorods through self-organization on isostructural MgO(001).

Growth of elastically-stiff, nanostructured, high-entropy alloy nitride, (VNbTaMoW)N/Al2O3(0001) thin film

Hicham Zaid et al.

Summary: Research has shown that a high-entropy alloy nitride thin film was grown using reactive magnetron sputtering, with its elastic modulus determined through in situ buckling tests. It was found that the alloy was stable and had higher stiffness than the parent binary nitrides due to cocktail effects expected of high-entropy alloys.

Recent Advances on Transition Metal Dichalcogenides for Electrochemical Energy Conversion

Xin Wu et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) show great promise for electrochemical energy conversion technologies due to their unique structural features, requiring activation of basal plane sites for full potential utilization. This review summarizes recent advances in TMDCs-based hybrids/composites with enhanced electrochemical activity, and discusses comprehensive in-plane activation strategies and underlying mechanisms. Additionally, strategic evaluation on further research directions of TMDCs in-plane activation is featured, shedding light on future design trends for TMDCs-based functional materials in electrochemical energy-related applications.

2D High-Entropy Transition Metal Dichalcogenides for Carbon Dioxide Electrocatalysis

John Cavin et al.

Summary: The research reports the prediction, synthesis, and multiscale characterization of 2D high-entropy transition metal dichalcogenide alloys with four/five transition metals, with MoWVNbTaS-2 alloy showing excellent electrochemical performance in CO2 conversion to CO. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the superior CO2 electroreduction is due to multi-site catalysis optimizing the rate-limiting step of CO desorption.
