Solution-Processed Copper Oxide Thin Film as Efficient Hole Transport Layer for Organic Solar Cells

Vishwas D. Patel et al.

Summary: A simple and cost-effective sol-gel-based spin-coating method for Cu-O film has been developed as an alternative to PEDOT:PSS in solar cell applications. The Cu-O film, when used as a hole transport layer (HTL), showed comparable performance to PEDOT:PSS, with both suffering from poor fill factor due to surface states. The amorphous Cu-O film did not introduce additional barriers to charge collection and worked efficiently in solar cell devices.

Phenomenological Prediction of the Band Diagram of Organic-Organic and Inorganic-Organic Heterointerfaces

Maybritt Muench et al.

Summary: A phenomenological rule for estimating electronic contact properties of organic-organic and inorganic-organic hetero interfaces is presented, deduced from a large number of experimentally studied heterojunctions. The data suggest that interface dipole formation and band bending are both attained by redistribution of electronic charge via integer charge transfer processes.

Cu/graphene hybrid transparent conducting electrodes for organic photovoltaic devices

Ju Hwan Kang et al.

Summary: Cu/graphene hybrid films serve as both p-type and n-type transparent conducting electrodes in organic solar cells, with sheet resistance and work function being significantly improved by controlling the thickness of Cu. The films also exhibit wrinkle features and doubled RMS currents, while devices utilizing Cu/graphene electrodes show much higher power conversion efficiencies compared to those with pristine graphene electrodes.

Energetic Alignment-Related Effect on Carrier Extraction in Organic Photovoltaic Devices with Cathode Conducting Layer

Jan-Kai Chang et al.

Summary: The study reports on the modification of the interface of active layer and cathodes with carrier selective materials, characterized by thermalization of hot metal diffusion via XPS and energetic offset via UPS. Investigations on the influence of cathode modification materials with various energetic offsets on V-oc and OPV performance parameters suggest that incorporating electrode modification materials with energetically favorable band alignment can improve photovoltaic performance.

Single-layered organic photovoltaics with double cascading charge transport pathways: 18% efficiencies

Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: By using quaternary blends, double cascading energy level alignment is achieved in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic active layers, optimizing light absorption, carrier transport, and charge-transfer state energy levels for higher power conversion efficiencies. The chemical structures of donors and acceptors allow control over electronic structure and charge-transfer state energy levels, enabling manipulation of hole-transfer rates, carrier transport, and non-radiative recombination losses.

Deciphering Electron Interplay at the Fullerene/Sputtered TiOx Interface: A Barrier-Free Electron Extraction for Organic Solar Cells

Dylan Amelot et al.

Summary: The electronic interaction at the interface between low-temperature-sputtered TiOx and C-70 acceptor fullerene molecules was investigated, revealing that C-70 quenches defect states in the band gap of TiOx and creates a new interfacial state. This new interfacial state supports favorable energy band alignment and barrier-free extraction of charges, making low-temperature-sputtered TiOx a promising candidate for the next generation of organic solar cells.

An Efficiency of 16.46% and a T80 Lifetime of Over 4000 h for the PM6:Y6 Inverted Organic Solar Cells Enabled by Surface Acid Treatment of the Zinc Oxide Electron Transporting Layer

Yunfei Han et al.

Summary: The surface pH conditions of solution-processed ZnO films were found to be closely related to the performance and stability of NFA OSCs. Treating ZnO films with acid solutions improved device performance, while removal of surface -OH groups alleviated performance issues and improved stability. Acid solutions, particularly PET treatment, were effective in enhancing performance, leading to long-term stability of the heterojunction solar cell.

Yuanbao Lin et al.

Summary: Self-assembled monolayers based on Br-2PACz, 2PACz, and MeO-2PACz were investigated as hole-extracting interlayers in organic photovoltaics. OPV cells using ITO/Br-2PACz anodes exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency due to the significantly higher work function of the ITO/Br-2PACz electrode, leading to improved hole transport and longer carrier lifetimes.

Correlation of Changes in Electronic and Device Properties in Organic Photovoltaic with Exposure to Air

Yanting Yin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the charge extraction/injection capability of molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) as an interface layer in polymer bulk heterojunctions and the formation of a dipole with significant influence on charge transport at the interface. Air exposure reduces the dipole at the interface, leading to decreased performance of the photovoltaic cells.
