Temperature influences the content and biosynthesis gene expression of saxitoxins (STXs) in the toxigenic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that temperature significantly affects cell growth and toxin production in toxic dinoflagellates, with 16 degrees Celsius being the most favorable temperature for cell growth. Lower temperatures and exposure to cold stress can increase the expression of toxin biosynthesis genes, while heat stress can downregulate the transcription of these genes. These results suggest that temperature may be a critical factor affecting the level and biosynthesis of toxins in marine toxic dinoflagellates.

Transcriptome survey, molecular identification, and expression analysis of stress-responsive genes in the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum under algicidal agents and metal stresses

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: The study characterized the transcriptome of marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum under various stresses, revealing numerous stress-responsive genes with potential diverse origins. Specifically, genes related to antioxidant enzymes, heat shock proteins, carotenoid biosynthesis, and other stress-responsive genes were identified. The findings suggest that A. pacificum possesses a range of stress-resistant genes that may aid in adaptation to new environments.

Low Temperature and Cold Stress Significantly Increase Saxitoxins (STXs) and Expression of STX Biosynthesis Genes sxtA4 and sxtG in the Dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella

Hansol Kim et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of temperature on cellular STXs and the expression of two core STX biosynthesis genes in toxic dinoflagellate A. catenella. Results showed that temperature significantly impacted the growth and STX production in A. catenella, as well as gene expression levels. This suggests that temperature may play a role in regulating toxicity and STX biosynthesis in dinoflagellates.
