Populations of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae are different in human-polluted environment and food items: a multicentre European study

Daniel Martak et al.

Summary: This study in five European cities found that food items were not the main source of ESBL-Ec and ESBL-Kp, as the strains from contaminated environments were genetically distinct from those in food. The findings suggest that human-to-human transmission is possibly the most frequent route of ESBL-Ec and ESBL-Kp transmission in high-income countries.

Evidence that faecal carriage of resistant Escherichia coli by 16-week-old dogs in the United Kingdom is associated with raw feeding

Oliver Mounsey et al.

Summary: This study investigated the carriage of antibacterial resistant Escherichia coli in 16-week-old dogs in the UK. The results showed that raw feeding was associated with the presence of resistant bacteria, and that the bacteria carried by puppies were shared with humans. This suggests that raw feeding may contribute to the transmission of antibacterial resistant bacteria.

Reduced Antibacterial Drug Resistance and bla(CTX-M )beta-Lactamase Gene Carriage in Cattle-Associated Escherichia coli at Low Temperatures, at Sites Dominated by Older Animals, and on Pastureland: Implications for Surveillance

Hannah Schubert et al.

Summary: A longitudinal survey of dairy farm antibacterial resistance in Southwest England revealed that local temperature changes over the course of a year were associated with the prevalence of antibacterial-resistant E. coli. The prevalence of resistant E. coli was lower on pastureland and higher in environments inhabited by young animals. These findings have important implications for routine surveillance and research surveys.

One Health drivers of antibacterial resistance: Quantifying the relative impacts of human, animal and environmental use and transmission

Ross D. Booton et al.

Summary: The study model predicts that human antibacterial use is the most important factor in reducing human colonization with resistant bacteria. The NSP-AMR plan in Thailand is projected to reduce human colonization by 6.0-18.8%, with more ambitious targets increasing this to 8.5-24.9%.

Limited phylogenetic overlap between fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli isolated on dairy farms and those causing bacteriuria in humans living in the same geographical region

Oliver Mounsey et al.

Summary: The study found limited impact of FQ-R E. coli from dairy farms on community bacteriuria in the local human population. Reducing fluoroquinolone use may lower the prevalence of FQ-R E. coli on farms, especially when dry cow therapy targets resistant E. coli ecology.
