Microstructural Development in As Built and Heat Treated IN625 Component Additively Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Holden Hyer et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the use of IN625 nickel-based superalloy components produced via laser powder bed fusion, and examines the microstructure changes after heat treatment based on different component geometries. The results show that the heat treatment leads to varied microstructural features in different sections of the components, which is critical for successful testing of the RL10 engine.

The Evolution of Oxygen-Based Inclusions in an Additively Manufactured Super-Duplex Stainless Steel

A. D. Iams et al.

Summary: Super-duplex stainless steel powder feedstocks used in directed energy deposition additive manufacturing processes have significantly higher oxygen content compared to wrought forms, leading to the formation of oxygen-rich inclusions. These inclusions play a crucial role in microstructural evolution during rapid heating and cooling cycles, affecting mechanical and corrosion properties. Complex structures with a combination of amorphous, metastable, and stable phases were observed in the powder feedstock, additively manufactured parts, and post-processed materials.

Influence of solidification structure on austenite to martensite transformation in additively manufactured hot-work tool steels

Chia-Ying Chou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure of a hot-work tool steel manufactured using laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF) and its response to post heat treatment through microstructure characterization and computational thermodynamics and kinetics. The high solidification and cooling rates during L-PBF process lead to the formation of an austenite phase with segregated alloying elements and solidification carbides. The austenite is partly transformed into martensite at lower temperatures, and micro-segregation can be predicted and compared with measured profiles at a nanometer scale.
