Microscopic structure, hydrogen permeability and hydrogen embrittlement resistance of Nb-Hf-Ni eutectic alloy

Feng Shi et al.

Summary: The microscopic structure, hydrogen embrittlement resistance, and hydrogen permeability of the eutectic alloy Nb-Hf-Ni system were studied briefly. The eutectic structural phase of {(Nb, Hf)+HfNi} was identified as the main phase of the Nb15.6Hf42.2Ni42.2 alloy, which showed hydrogen embrittlement at high temperatures. The hydrogen permeability of the Nb(15.6)Hf(42.2)Ni(42.2) alloy was slightly higher than that of pure palladium metal.

Nb35Hf32.5Co32.5 dual-phase alloy: Hydrogen permeability degradation due to the microstructural changes caused by annealing

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure and hydrogen permeability changes of Nb35Hf32.5Co32.5 alloy under annealing conditions. The alloy maintained its hypereutectic structure after short-time annealing, but new impurity phases were formed with increased annealing time, leading to reduced hydrogen permeability and brittle fracture after long-time annealing. Annealing was found to deteriorate the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the Nb-Hf-Co hydrogen permeable alloys.

Summary: The phase diagram and solidification path of the Nb-Ti-Fe alloy system were investigated using the CALPHAD approach, leading to the successful design and fabrication of multi-phase hydrogen-permeable alloys. Small variations in alloy composition can result in significant changes in hydrogen permeation properties, mainly due to the transition of the TiFe phase structure.

Summary: Hydrogen embrittlement causes material degradation in metal-hydrogen systems. Alloying with Ni can improve the stability and resistance to H embrittlement of VHx phases in pure V. The addition of Ni helps reduce the H trapping ability of vacancies and suppresses H retention in V.
